67-72 question engine trans/

Hey!
I need a good answer for this:
I have a 1970 Chevy 1/2 ton long bed pickup. Some knucklehead put a 350 Buick Engine & Trans in it when the motor went.

I have a 1984 Chevy 305 V8 and 350TH Trans I want to put in it.

This truck had a Powerglide steering column in it.

Here are my questions:

1.Do I need to change the steering column for the 350TH Trans or will the Powerglide column work?

2.Other than the motor mounts, do I need brackets that they sit on?

3.Do I have to use the 67-72 Transmission cross member? (transmission mount)

4.I think the 84 used the long tailshaft so can I use it and move the cross member back or do I have to use one with the short 6" tailshaft OR can I interchange tailshafts and put a 6" on the 350TH Trans the 9" came off of?

Thanks!
WC Edgar

You can use the powerglide column but the gear indicator positions won't line up.

You can use the crossmember, but you may have to move it forward or back.

You can't change the tailshaft housing by itself, you have to disassemble the entire transmission and change the output shaft too.

Re: 67-72 question engine trans/

If the Buick trans has the same length tail shaft as the chevy 350 your trans should just bolt right in.

If it was mine I'd probably leave the 350 Buick in it and run it rather than put an underpowered 305 in it for snob appeal. But that is just me. I've run a couple of those Buick engines and they run pretty good and are pretty reliable. A friend has run a 455 Buick in his 72 Crew cab ramp truck for the past 20 years. that truck hauls rigs bigger than it is at times.

The length of the trans tailshaft does not affect the crossmember position. The mount is under the case of the trans. You will bolt it into the factory TH350 mount holes. The only thing the tailshaft length affects is the driveshaft length.
