engine assembly
I have been collecting the parts and now I am ready to assemble my motor. It is a 350 4 bolt with Comp cams XE262, Performer RPM, 600 cfm, headers, 2.02/1.6 stock heads, th400, 3.73 posi, and thats about it. I have the follwing question about oil pump and will surely have other questions over the next few days.
I bought a Melling high volume oil pump and it came with the following warning. I think I need to change out the spring for the lower pressure but am not sure if I really need a high volume pump. Will this work ok with a stock oil pan without running dry?

I run a high volume/ high pressure oil pump on my 350 and i never had a oil pressure problem. It gets up to 80 psi when its cold. I never rev it up when its pushing that much pressure because i'm afraid of blowing out the oil filter. My oil filter relief valve is pluged.
I would run the high pressure spring. Randy

I run a hy vol/hy press pump on the 383, with an old 6 Quart truck pan. I am also very careful not to rev the eng before it warms up.....it runs 80psi cold! After warmup, it settles down to 68-70 psi @ 3000 rpms, & pressure @ idle is about 42 psi. Chances are that you dont need that big pump on a street driven truck, & it will cost a little more power to run.....but shouldnt hurt anything. if you drive the truck in cold weather, I would be especially careful to let the eng warm up good before you drive. Thanks all. I think I am going to use the lower pressure spring but stay with the high volume pump.
I have started putting it together today and here is another question. What should the screw in studs for the rocker arms be torqued to? I checked a couple and they were loose. These heads are casting number 462824 with 2.02 and 1.6 valves and I am using guide plates.

50 ft lbs. Locktite red if you have any. It's what is used on my race motors

Hi volume but not high pressure.I have seen a smallblock that was very expensive to build and very well built.However the owner did not know to let the engine come to full temp before higher RPM operation.He washed out the bearings with too high of pressure .

thanks everyone. I went with the regular spring in the pump and torqued the studs to 50 lbs.
