Re: Cain't believe I found this in MICHIGAN!

Thanks for the help to a fellow redneck!

These doors will need attention some day but for now I'll enjoy the way it looks I think... I need to rewire my garage to support my mig welder anyways!

After reading more about this 307 and now that I checked the oil after about 90 miles of driving, it's 2 quarts low and I guess it's going through more oil than I thought! The engine will come out, get well oiled and wrapped up on a stand in place of the well built 350 sitting on the floor. The only thing I'm thinking of, is do I run the nice rebuilt 2 barrell on my 350 or do I spend the money I don't want to spend on a Summit Carb http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-M08600VS/ to give the bigger engine what it wants? I've got a weiand high rise single plane intake sitting next to the 350 and I'll probably ditch the predator carb sitting on it. Choices Choices

Re: Cain't believe I found this in MICHIGAN!

Well I started digging the new powerplant out of the garage tonight, didn't even realize it came with a mini starter! With circle track racing in the family heritage I'm thinking I'll run a set of old track tires, 26.5 x 8 is what most run around here and they can't give them away fast enough! I've run them on the back of the S10 for a few seasons and they wear quite well and even do ok in the rain! Like the look of a fat tire in the front too and thinking about blacking the wheels or maybe running some other steelies that I had on the K5, not sure about fitment yet. It should be in the 50s next week, if the mud driveway dries up a bit I might start pulling the 307 and prepping for the 350 swap. Fun fun! I'm thinking I'll run the 2 barrel for now and see how it runs before spending the extra money on a new carb right away. This wasn't supposed to cost any more money for a while...

Looks like a real nice truck. It even has the optional "Corvette option" sunvisor.

Is that really what it's called? I've thought about some day removing it to see what kind of rust lies beneath the rain gutter and the cracked old seam sealer! Looks like it's about 41 years old up there.

Thanks for the move, and yes she's cute just like her mommy! And she can already be a handful sometimes! It was a bit too cold for the 1 year old, but when it warms up I'll take her out to play too!

As for the project update, I cleaned up the repower plant, pulled the intake and valve covers, looks like a clean healthy runner! I'm going to try this week to get the 307 pulled and swap the intake over, then drop it in.

Crazy question, for the motor mounts, is it commonplace to pull the engine with the soft mount still attached, or do most leave the soft mounts in place too? Sorry, I'm used to the 73 and up mounts!

I also realized last night the dizzy in the truck is a little off, the typical #8 is where #1 wire is... 18436572, right? Anyway, it's one wire off, they must not have cared about "proper" placement as long as they knew where number 1 was

Re: Cain't believe I found this in MICHIGAN!

Thats a heck of a find, especially in Michigan. I lived there for 17 years and most of those trucks were rusted half way up the doors. The bed is really in good shape. I had a cab that was rusted the same on the firewall and I got rid of it because once I started looking deeper the inside of the vent plenum was rusted out really bad clear down into the cab. Congrats on the New Old truck.

Considering I'm used to my vehicles having plenty of weight reduction kits (rust) I know exactly what you're talking about reffering to the trucks up here.

On a good note, I looked down into the vents and in the fresh air cab vents and they are empty and clean. A couple pine needles to clean out on top of the cowl but that's it! I really want to pull the floor mat up and see what's under the whole floor, do any repairs needed then do a roll on bedliner for the most protection possible. But it'll probably be a bit before I can get that far into it.

Re: Cain't believe I found this in MICHIGAN!

Holy cow I'm used to having a 15 year old truck give me greif when I'm changing a tire! The engine and trans came out just great, nothing really gave me any troubles breaking bolts loose I guess that's how it's supposed to be...

Working in the mud sucks! Tip to the crafty and people who don't have a garage or cement pad - flip your front extensions on your cherry picker to turn it into a ski instead of an anchor! You can move in dirt and mud much easier...

Got my 69 plates in the mail yesterday too.

Pictures to come

Re: Cain't believe I found this in MICHIGAN!

Hmmmm.... problems! I was wondering if the oil pan was going to hit the k-member and it does. I think it might clear if I were to move the motor mounts to the back holes, but now I'm wondering what kind of problems that will cause with the clutch, trans mounts, linkages and driveshaft.

Re: Cain't believe I found this in MICHIGAN!

Good News! Per my father in law, the oil pickup on the new engine is stock so I will be able to swap pans and have no mods on the rest of the truck to make everything work! Hope to pull things back out and get it swapped by the end of the weekend. Off to the parts store for an oil pan gasket

Re: Cain't believe I found this in MICHIGAN!

I now have the stock pan swapped over and she fits like a glove! Working quite a bit and the weather isnt very great outside so I've been working on the truck in the dark only if at all. It's fun with shop lights and drop lights! Some day soon I'll hear this powerplant breathe to life and away I go

I was cleaning out the glove box and found some nic chrome CST/10 badges. There's no way this is/was a CST, is there? I thought that was the loaded model, right?

Alto, huh? I'm on the west end of 52nd just north of the expressway!

Small world once again. If you're from in town, I was part of Heid's Ride back in the fall last year.

Re: Cain't believe I found this in MICHIGAN!

The issue was just in the balancer. I pulled the one from the 307 and pressed that on and I'm good to go. I have a video from last night, sorry it's dark and the sound quality isn't perfect.

Re: Cain't believe I found this in MICHIGAN!

Not too much of an update, but I've managed to get the driveshaft in and I need to weld up the sloppy shift arms at work before it's ready to move under it's own power. The carb will need to be jetted, I'll start on that once I can get it rolling.

Re: Cain't believe I found this in MICHIGAN!

Well I finally put my shifter arms on the transmission last night, hooked them up and filled the gearbox with oil and away she went! Me and my three girls drove around the yard, did a few grass burnouts and donuts and I was pleased with the way it ran. I'll have to get it licensed and insured to get it on the road for good so hopefully I'll make time next week to go to the DMV. Even taught the misses how to shift the 3 on the tree but she's not so sold on the manual steering!

Re: Cain't believe I found this in MICHIGAN!

I sure do love driving Smoky, but long and short of things, the new powerplant just isn't working out. Something must have happened to it in it's only 4 races and the thing just won't quit burning oil. I pulled the valve springs off the other day and the seals are good and the guides feel tight so I'm starting to believe it may be a problem with the rings.

On top of the other issues I had the other day... I've decided to pull the engine out of my 71 project and run it in the 69 for now. We pulled the 71 back into the driveway today so I can pull the front clip off and pop the engine out one of these nights after work. My father in law is staying with us for a while so he might be able to help me out in the garage more often since he used to live 30 minutes away.

Link to my problem page if anyone cares to have a laugh... http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=474193

At least the weather is nicer now and the driveway will be dry and less soupy! Things were still thawing out when I swapped engines the first time.
