Classic Parts LED tail lights
I recieved a pair of LED tail lights as a x-mas gift. they are from Classic Parts.
I thought i remember reading that you needed a special flasher (or something) for using LED's in tail lights or parking lights. The catalog and the instructions make no mention of using or needing anything extra in the wiring to make them work properly. Can anyone enlighten me? thanks |

Re: Classic Parts LED tail lights
Quite often the LED bulbs don't draw enough amps to trigger a standard flasher. That is the reason for changing the flasher. The standard flasher may see it as a bulb being burned out and not work.

I have heard you can put a "load resistor" in line with the LED light, but seems a flasher would be easier and quickly replaceable. I would look on some of the LED light web sites and see what is recommended. They might even sell you one.

You don't need a special flasher if you're still running the original 1157 bulbs in the front turn signals, they will put enough load for the old style of flasher to work. If you're also running LEDs in the front, then you would need an electronic flasher.

Re: Classic Parts LED tail lights
When I put my L.E.D.s in it would blink, But it was very slow.
An electronic flasher from the local parts house fixed it for about 8 bucks.

Re: Classic Parts LED tail lights
I'll get a pic later.
I installed them and took it for a drive. i did notice the lights flashed slower. several times i noticed the drivers side turn signal indicator go green even though i wasnt using the blinker. It would go out and then come back on, only to go back out. Does this mean i need a special flasher? Why would it make the turn signal indicator light up like a bulb was blown? |

Re: Classic Parts LED tail lights
When I added LED rears, they worked fine with the flasher that was already in there. This was also true on my Jeep when I added the trailer-style LEDs in the rear corner guards. I think the combination of the other lights on the circuit is sometimes enough to show the flasher the load wants to see, but often time the flasher will indeed have to be replaced, maybe a case by case type thing. I would imagine that long lengths of old wiring (to the tail lights as well to the front) also contribute to the necessary load. The ones I added to my 72 were the ones that just plug into the original light socket, no wiring required. I'd say toss 'em in and see what happens, maybe it will be good to go with your stock flasher.
