10 year old gasoline

What kind of problems have you guys had with old gas in the tank? My truck sat for 10 years and the sending unit was clogged with rusty deposits. I replaced it and got it running. It idles just fine, but does not accelerate off the line without stalling. There is only a few gallons of gas in the tank and I suspect water, rust, and 10 year old gas is the problem.

If the carb also sat 10 years I would suspect that the accelerator pump in the carb is dried out , if it does not start pumping fuel the second the throttle is in motion , you will get a hesitation.. I think a carb rebuild is in order..

Re: 10 year old gasoline

My truck had been sitting since about 1990 and it was full of gas. Luckly the only thing wrong was the sending unit. It wouldn't start and I had to use starting fluid to get it running and it burned really bad, used almost the whole tank just getting it running and driving around the town maybe 50-75 miles. Change the main fuel filter, put fresh gas in it and see if it gets better. I'm on the 2nd tank and it's getting better over time

Re: 10 year old gasoline

I had the carb off and in the garage that whole time, empty and dry. When I bolted it back on it took awhile to get gas out of the primary nozzle. Haven't even checked the secondaries yet.

i would just dump the gas out! i would think you would have rust in the line that can be clogging it, and replace the fuel filter! i got a l6 230 running that sat for a few years! try that first if it don't get better a carb rebuild kit is pretty cheap and not that hard to do! i agree with ambrown the carb might have dried out!!

Re: 10 year old gasoline

My suburban sat from 1992 until 5 months ago and I had to completely pull out and clean the fuel tank, replace the sender and fuel filter, pump and carburetor. The only things I did not replace was the lines, and I am kicking myself for not doing it because every now and then something will break loose and get clogged in the idle circuit of the carb and not allow it to idle until I clean it out. Pain in the A*S.

Not only dump the 10 year old gas but you will also find out that the fuel filter will have to be replaced a few times. My truck was parked since 97 until march of this year and I had to change the fuel filter like three times and replaced the carb.
