The name is not intentionally _ord but I am working on a 73 _100. Shelby is my black lab's name. Am I a troll? The truck is an 84 GMC. Just trying to find out more about it. I fly OH-58D and OH-58A/C helicopter for the Army.

Pretty good guys, except the H vin is for a 305, LE9, 4 barrel carbed engine (Q-jet). Same engine that came in just about every one of these 80's trucks, except maybe for California trucks.

Mike,
When i posted that i was thinking it wasn't right cuz '84 didn't have EFI unless they consider the ECC as EFI. But i don't know if '84 even had the ECC set -up. Did it? And that was copied right out of my '92 S10 owners manual and it stated H=5.0l V8 EFI RPO LO3. You'd think that once an eng.is assigned a specific letter it would stay the same for every year. In this case H did specify that it was a 305 or 5.0l for all years but the method of fuel delivery has changed. So should the letter be the same? What do you think? |

After the 305's went to FI, they changed the code to LO3. My 87 van with a 305 is the LO3, but it is the H engine VIN.
All the 80's C10's, up to 87, came with 305's as you know. They all had the ESC, even the California trucks had it, but it was controlled through the ECM. Federal trucks only had the ESC controller. All the 305's in half ton pickups were the LE9's under the federal standard. Not real sure if they were LE9 in California though. More than likely were, but I'm thinking they had a computer controlled carb. Maybe someone from Cali will chime in on this.

Thanks for the data dump everyone. The carb is a 4v Q-jet. Just confirms most of what I knew except that it was built in Canada. American as Chevrolet and Apple Pie......it's Canadian....oh well, not bad just ironic. 87 Stepper......yes it's a military version of a BJR 206/407.

Oh, forgot to say, in 81, the 305 2 barrel engine had a G VIN.
From what I have record of, the H VIN 305 started in 81, for the 4 barrel engines, at least for trucks anyway. It even stayed with the H VIN in 87 when they went to TBI, as is the case with my van, but the RPO code went to LO3. Some of the things GM does sure is strange. |

BigShelby,
Welcome indeed from another current Alabama resident. Now I know who it is that keeps flying over my pad! You did it! LOL I do get quite a few Sh*thooks and OD Bell Jet Rangers from time to time but don't remember seeing any OH-58s. They are real easy to spot with ET's head on the top. I have a air-lane right over my property apparently. At least the military aircraft don't get down as low as the news choppers. Those idiots hug the trees sometimes. |

Almost all of the Cali trucks have 305s too. The code is still the LE9 but had the ECM, ESC, and a computer controlled carb. Same engine, just more crap on it.
BTW: Isn't the El Camino 305 engine code J? I think the only difference is it had a 2 barrel carb & manifold.
