Adjusting the shift points on a Hydramatic
I'm looking in the service manual for my Hydramatic and am a little confused. Are the shift points determaned by the govenor and throttle position. I think the shift points are too close. I'm in 4th geer by teh time I cross a large inetrsection and it seems like the truck downshifts late. I know I'm not doing myself any favors by running 28" tall tires with 410 gears but that's the way it came.

Re: Adjusting the shift points on a Hydramatic
when you say hydramatic, Does it have a vacuum modulator and a shift control cable/rod to the carb?? I do remember reading that those were tempermental.. my buddy has one in an olds and it would do the same thing ,seems like it skipped 2nd or 3....... I was having the same problem with my th350 and replaced the modulator, but the new one was not adjusted properly and had to take it up about 10 turns on the screw in the inlet before it would space the shifts... I think I havbe a manual for the hydramatic somewhere I will see if I can find it ...

This link should point you in the right direction even though it's for an earlier series:

Re: Adjusting the shift points on a Hydramatic
The Hydra-Matics have a govenor and rod to the throttle and do not work off vaccum. The shift points are pretty close and a little jerky and it when coming to a stop the truck is slow to get out of 4th gear, shudders a little then nutural and then first. Thanks Mark, I'm looking into it now.
