frame paint

Ok the frame is cleaned and primed, I am thinking of using Tractor Supply's gloss black with the hardener, any comments or suggestion?

Re: frame paint

I just used rustolium semi gloss black sold at walmart $8.99 a quart. It is an oil based paint and takes a couple months to get maximum hardness. Seems to be very durable and can be touched up with there matching spray cans.

Re: frame paint

I don't see anything wrong with the tractor supply paint or the rustolium if the truck is intended for a driver. The local hardware store has some industrial paint that is tougher than an old boot that I'll probably used. About the same price as the ones you guys are looking at.

Re: frame paint

I used Nason Chassis Semi Gloss Black over primer. On some rusted places I put down POR15 first.

Re: frame paint

I just painted a steel workbench with Valspar Tractor and Implement paint. It comes in a brush can or spray can. I have used a LOT of paint and this is the nicest I have used yet. I have only used the Valspar once, but I can say I will not use Rustoleum again.

Re: frame paint

I painted some metal patio furniture with the valspar tractor and implement paint w/ hardener sold at TSC and it takes forever to harden (like 7-10 days). Not a big deal if you have time.

For frames, I like an epoxy primer in black. It etches and sticks like nothing else and you can topcoat if you like. 1 gallon with reducer and hardener of summit racing's brand (kirker re-branded) is less than $100 and makes almost 2 sprayable gallons.

Jeff, not an argument, just curious. What caused your dissatisfaction with Rustoleum?

Re: frame paint

The Rustoleum always seems too thin and runs. Even after it is dry is seems to be thin. Even when that is all I ever used--I didn't like it. The Valspar is nice and thick and flows out very well. There is not one brush mark on my bench. I really like the Valspar, but it does take a while to dry.

Re: frame paint

I just used some rattle can VHT Chassis Black S/G from Advance Auto Parts on my frame. My frame will be tucked away in the corner of the garage for a couple years, so I figured what the hell...

It actually doesn't look bad at all...
