Steering Gear - Core

I just placed an order for a remanufactured manual steering gear. The best price I could find was 180 bucks. Now get this, the core charge on it is $243.

How can my old, worn-out steering box be more valuable than the rebuilt?

Marketing ploy. Some companies want to gut a buyer by quoting a low ball price for the part and after you commit to the order they hit you with an astronomical core charge...A1 Cardone has a rebuilt manual box for a 68 C-10 for 138.00 with a 150.00 core charge.
GM has one for 128.00 with a 75.00 core charge. Buyer Beware.

The local GMC dealer wanted almost $400 for the part plus a 75 core charge.

when there is a limited number of cores, the core becomes more valuable. Supply and demand plain and simple. If they kinda want it, then there's a $10 core, if they want it bad, then there's a couple hundred dollar core.
A few years ago we replaced the injectors on a powerstroke at work, $500 per injector, with a $500 core. International trucks have problems with the interment panel going out...I think it's a $600 core.

People be where the Box there buying you is a RIPP off they sell you the 3 turn box but your factory one is a 4 1/2 turn Box. which mean your factory box turns Sharper. I rather trade you the 1 3 turn box i have and get a few of them 4 turn Boxes they say that's Turn rashio. That Not true

Trust me your old steering Box Lock to Lock your tires turn sharper and you just gave away a 500.00 box for a Crappy short turn Box and it sucks when you have to back up to make another stab at a the drive way

i bought a power steering box from kragens for $120...$50 core charge. i am happy with it.

So I picked up the gear this afternoon. When I got it home, I noticed it has been leaking oil from the top cover (or cover bolts) and the gear seems to bind just at the center point. I don't have a torque wrench that measures in pound-inches but it seems to bind more than the 4-6 lb-in that the spec says, but only at the center point.

Any ideas if that is normal?

A bind at the center point is normal. The in/lb reading is for the worm brgs with no load on the secter. When you get it installed the wheels should be pointed straight ahead when the gear is obn the high point.
It shouldn't be leaking oil. If it is leaking at the bolts you could take it out & put some RTV on it. If I remember correctly the bolt in the center is the only one that is wet.

foot 1 ft/lb of torque is 12 in/lb so.....6 in/lb is 0.5 ft/lb

If they need cores that bad then they should talk to me. I have a mountain of cores that I would sell cheap.
