If the work was done right, then it probably is worth the money. He probably has more than that in it.
The issue is how do you know if it is done correctly. Jim |

Yes, it is the good stuff! You could get a parts catalog and price it out.
We built a 427 BB and it is mostly stock but with parts and machine work we were over $2,000 not counting the cost of the engine that we started with. Jim |

...i would have to say yes its worth it....machine work with balancing and head work your probably looking some where around $700 to $1000...JE pistons around $500 to $800...and around here a junk big block goes for $1000....but like jim said is it done right?...maybe ask the guy to pull the pan and give a good look..maybe check the rod and mains for clearence and check the bore for fresh hone marks

Offer to pay for a session on a dyno. If everything is good, you know what hp it makes, it gets broke in, and you know it will hold together, at least for a while. If you dyno and everything is good, pay what he wants. If it isn't good, then you save yourself a lot of time and money.

It will vary by region, but should be able to get a few pulls for $100-$300. Call around your area to find out prices.
