How many channels??

What type of amp do I need to push 2 6x9's and 2 6.5's? Not necessarily a brand, just how many channels?

How audio signals run @ home or in your car:

Mono = 1
Stereo = 2

Left + Right = Stereo

So Front/Right is 1 Audio Channel and Front/Left is 1 Audio Channel
Rear/Right is 1 Audio Channel and Rear/Left is 1 Audio Channel.

2 Channel Amps just cover Left and Right (Stereo)
4 Channel Amps handle Left and Right as well as Front and Rear

You would need a 4 Channel Amp for (I assume) your 2 6.5's in the front and 6x9's in the rear.

That's all for today's lesson. Be prepared for a quiz on Friday.

Re: How many channels??

You can do a 2 or 4 channel, depending on the amp and how you want it staged. Like Mal said, you want left/right, or do you want front/rear as well. Also, if your speakers have different power ratings, a 4 channel amp will give you a gain control to increase/decrease output front/rear so you can put proper power to each set.

alright sweet, 4 channel it is. Mal, thanks for the breakdown. I'm still new to audio, and that helped me understand a little better.

2 Rockford Fosgate 6x9
2 Rockford Fosgate 6.5

Re: How many channels??

That would work great for the subs. Unless you have your heart set on 8" subs, go with a pair of 10s. There are shallow subs out there that will fit in a small box if you are limited on space.
