Re: battery or starter??

Sounds like the horn short was your problem. You need to charge the battery real good & recheck the charging voltage. It should be like Doc says. These bats we get now charge up very slow. The lead has been used over & over.

Saving $160 bucks on a new red top would ease a lot of that Pain. LOL

Re: battery or starter??

Congratulations in finding the "smoking gun". Us readers didn't have a lot of detail to go on, leaving a lot of guess work on our part. I'm going to share some advice I picked up from my high school automotive teacher years ago.

"Anyone can fix a car by randomly replacing parts one at a time until it works. But they will end up wasting the customer's time and money, and in the end, may wind up with two cars, one of which still won't run..."

The motto of the story is that there is a lot of value in learning how to properly diagnose a problem without spending money on randomly bought parts. Of course, if a part is near the end of it's life anyway, or is considered a consumable item, it may be worth it to replace it anyway.
