Hello from the 67-72 side of the forum.. I have a question in regards to my dads 66 c20. It was rear ended and pushed the big steel bumper on one side into the rear quarter panel end cap and pushing the quarter up and in.. We are wondering how do we remove the cap from the bed side?? Do I have to take the whole thing down and take it off or can I do it with it still mounted on the truck??

What is the cap? Upper bed side or front roll pan? Pics?

The end piece that houses the tail light lens. It looks like a cap on the rear attached to the bedside. It is removable right??

This part... How do I remove it so I can repair it and pull the bedside down and out???

Just looking at the one on my parts truck I'd say it seems to be welded around the exterior parimeter (someone else beat it up so I don't know if they were just spot welds or not). There doesn't look like there was any welding on the tailgate side. I'm sure somebody else has more info.

Thanks Slow.. I took too bolts out in the lower section today from underneath and looked for spot welds but I was having trouble locating them. The truck is super clean (no rust) so I dont wanna have to pull off the whole bedside to fix this one area.

it is spot welded all the way from the edge above the tail gate chain bracket down to the bottom of the quarter panel. i removed mine by taking off the tail gate chain bracket then running a cut off wheel all the way around it. then all the spot welds are accessable, and hit them with a spot weld cutter to remove the rest of the piece.

OK I gotcha. Yes as stated they are removable. Unfortunately I snagged mine on a fence and removed it by accident. I ordered a new on. It's going to take a little work to make it fit though. I'm considering riveting it back on since I do not have a spot welder and access is limited without removing the bedside.

I would cut away the crumpled part to get to the spot welds easily. A good Blair spot weld cutter is the tool for the job. You can drill holes and plug weld the new piece.

My question is , how would anyone access the inside area to spot weld the new one on??? I replaced the whole bed corner/post and I got to looking at it and figure the factory must have had some weird spot weld rig to get up in there....

the best way to re-attach a repro or repair one is to use panel bonding glue..that is if you want to keep the factory seam.

it is spot welded on, and there is no way to get at the spots without either destroying the bedside or cap...
