5.3 or 6.0 LSx swap in 72 K10?

I am doing some research on this. I was thinking this would be a relatively easy swap, IF you want to keep the th350 trans. Ideally I'd like a 4L60e, or a 4L80e. The trouble is the t case output on all the newer stuff is on the drivers side, and the original 205 is on the passenger side. So that means swapping a Ford or some other diff that has the driver side pinion, correct?

It would need to stay solid axle, a IFS is not something I want to do on this truck.

I'm sure someone has already done this swap?

You could still run a GM 205. Just because the trans originally had drivers drop T-case, doesnt mean you cant run a passenger drop case. Its not like the trans spins a different way or anything.

The 4l60e is basically a newer version of the th305/700r4. While there are marked differences, the output shaft on the 4l60e is still 27 spline like its earlier predecessors. This means that you can mate a th350 version 205 behind it, as those had 27 spline inputs. It will require that you use the earlier (1992-97) 4 bolt flange version of the 4l60e, combined with a 2" aluminum spacer and normal th350 T-case adapter. The 4l60e has a longer output shaft than the th350/700r4. There is a short shaft available to convert the output shaft of the 4l60e to the same length as the th350/700r4, but some cite tranny pan interference with the front driveshaft.

The same logic follows with the 4l80e, as it is still 32 spline like the th400. You could use a th400 version 205. These cases are harder to come by and more expensive. But of coarse, a much better setup.

either would be fine for most applications.
