Re: odometer question

No power drill needed. It takes less than 5 minutes to do once it is apart. It is kind of hard to explain though.

Re: odometer question

If you spin it at 100 mph, it will take you 30 hours to do. Just take it apart and zero it out. then you will have almost 30 hours to do something else.

Re: odometer question

there is nothing illegal about this. It is illegal to LIE about it and try to make it more valuable.
i flat out told the Ohio BMV that I rolled it back. They didn't bat an eye.
I used to roll one back every week at work when we were doing complete rebuilds on P/30 trucks.

Re: odometer question

It's all about "Disclosure". Andy is right. Lying about it is what gets the seller in hot water...or the clink.

I remember when I was younger, reading in the auto mags and stuff like Popular Mechanics (and others) about the tale-tale signs of odometer roll-back. Examples included seeing wear on the floor mats/carpets, brake pedal pads (and clutch pedal pads), seat covers, arm rests and so forth, that just seemed excessive for the miles showing. Of course, other tricks existed to help cover up noises and stuff, like replacing the coolant in a system that had oil in it, with kerosene. Worked well at nighttime, like those cattle-barn car auctions. I've had one guy tell me that they would pack rear-ends with stuff to help quieten a whiney-hiney. Bananas? That's what he said they used. But, that lot was one of those local lots (with a shady reputation) that would sell you a car for $25 down and $10 a week, then repossess it if you missed one payment....then, re-sell it again, repossess it and do it all again.

Do it, but don't lie about it. Documentation is the key.

Re: odometer question

Yeah, I replaced my speedometer with a Autometer, so it read zero. I don't see any difference in a new speedo, and rolling back to odometer....same result: both read zero miles (got about 850 miles on mine now )

Re: odometer question

Most states if it is over 10 years old it is exempt from mileage disclosure. Back in the 50s when a car got to a used car lot the first thing they did was turn it back. There were guys that went around from lot to lot doing it. They would put there legs over the seat & head in back of the dash. They pulled out a dash light socket & pocked a tool in there & changed the reading. They only had to change one #. Usually from 60-70K back to 30. They got $5 each car.
