1T GVW and 3/4T GVW?

I have a '73 C30 std cab single rear wheel 1ton the GVW is 8200lbs, I also have a '77 C20 std cab and the GVW is the same as the 1t....8200lbs??????? Why is that? I thought the 1t would have a higher GVW...?

Re: 1T GVW and 3/4T GVW?

I don't have an 'official' answer (and this is as much opinion as anything, sure more will chime in...), but I've learned there are many factors in determining the gvw on our trucks. The axles are one factor, all having thier own weight ratings. Springs also are a factor (number of leafs, size of leafs, different coil springs for 2wd's, etc). I think even brakes sizes have a bit of a factor. Thats my thoughts. I've ran into simular setup, where my '87 V-10 had a 6400 lb. gvw vs. the '85 GMC K2500 parts truck I bought for a 3/4 ton axle swap with a 6600 lb. gvw.

It's a mystery. I have 9 leaf springs per side on my 76 C25 and heavy duty front coils (and axles to match) but still only a gvw of 6400... I think a lot of it depends on whether or not the original owner paid for a higher gvw option, like a Camper Special.

My '83 K20 had 9 leaf springs plus an overload in the rear, and the standard springs up front. My GVW was 8,600 lbs.

Yeah the Camper Special option bumps the GVW up. In another thread a guy was saying he had the exact same axles, springs, etc as a Camper Special but since that option wasn't paid for his GVW was lower.

GVW is a pretty arbitrary number...

Re: 1T GVW and 3/4T GVW?

Your GVW is affected by brakes and tires. Both your trucks run the same brakes I bet, unless one is a hydroboost. TRUE one ton trucks used hydroboost and dual rear wheels. The duals will greatly increase your GVW as per the sidewall ratings. Hope this helps.
