Shiming the pwr steering pump out? Everything on same pulley?

hey all, my pwr steering pump doesnt line up with my mian pulley wheel. It lines up right in the middle of the 2 groves on my (harmonic balancer?) there is an extra unused groove in the main pulley (harmonic balancer?) but someone told me i can shim out my pwr steering pump to make the groove for the pulley line up with the one that the alternator etc is running on. is this a good idea, or should i keep on my hunt looking for a pulley that somehow recesses the groove of my pwr steering pulley back? any input appreciated. thanks!

My PS pump pulley pumps line up with the outermost groove of the crank pulley and run separate belts. What side is your alternator on, the driver's side as was original?

Re: Shiming the pwr steering pump out? Everything on same pulley?

Because your alternator is on the passenger side, you probable have a newer (73 up) 350 with a long water pump as opposed to the original which would have had a short water pump. Someone on here who has dealt with this type of non standard setup can probably tell you what power steering pump pulley you will need to get it to line up with the crank pulley. I wouldn't recommend shimming your pump out. If it is an original pump bracket, it will bolt to the left lower front of the block (drivers's side) and the motor mount's front bolt. Therefore, you can't shim it forward or backwards. Note: You will need a double crank pulley. PS should have a separate v belt.
