oil in the intake and all the way to the plugs

i have an issue. it started with a stuck valve which prompted a head swap. i went from 888 heads to 882. after that a lifter collapsed which i pulled it apart again then i found oil at the bottom of the intake under the carb. also found oil in the runners all the way to all the plugs . i used metal shim gaskets coated with 4 coats of copper sealer.

not sure what to try next. is it the heads? is it the head gaskets?

need help.

get some fel pro headgaskets blue ,i bet the copper got bent or blew out

Blown head gasket? hmmm how would that allow oil into the top of the intake?

Are you sure your PVC isn't picking up oil? That would even mean you have oil in the carb (and all the way down like you say) - have you checked this?

replaced the head gaskets with metal shim coated with copper spray.

no signs of oil in the carb. carb gasket dry. oil only in the bottom of intake under carb gasket.

i'm confused.

i am not sure if the pcv is picking up oil but the valve cover is baffled. putting everything back together this weekend plugging everything. will post the results.

...but you see my point? I'm a pretty new gearhead considering folks on this site have been at this for decades but I don't see how a BHG can get you oil in the intake runners...

do you have cheap chrome valve covers without baffels in them? oil gets sucked into carb thru PVC system when using that type of valve cover

yes i do. i'm new to this too but i love it.

i do not have valve covers w/o baffles. i'll try to find some before this weekend and use those. my plan is to plug all pvc, and vacuum lines except distributor and choke.

What intake gasket are you using? You should use a softer gasket with an aluminum intake. Only use the stock style gasket in a rebuild gasket set with a cast iron manifold.


A recent engine I worked on had a huge ding on the head where it mated to the intake. This engine had sucked a massive quantity of oil and the valves were caked.

The heads have no dents or scratches. I found an edelbrock aluminum intake on craigslist and have just put it on and i'm almost finished putting it all back together. i plugged all vaccum ports. i am using all fel-pro gaskets with steel shim head gaskets. should have it ready to start by sunday (hopefully).

If your block is decked and your heads surfaced, you may need to have your intake manifold machined to match. I have heard about this situation, but I haven't seen it.

You also need to put sealant around the intake manifold bolts.

i feel !! put everything together and started it up first try. no oil in the intake. now to plug in all vaccum lines and see which one causing the issue.

No more oil. What am I missing here, is there another issue? What are you messing with vacuum lines for?

i was thinking the oil had to come from the top (intake or carb) down. will run it again for about an hour and check again. if nothing, i will start connecting lines again one at a time to see which is the issue.
