1969 CST questions

I just picked up a 1969 CST 3/4 ton LWB pickup today. Have not had a chance to check it out very closely yet, but did notice somethings that made me wonder.
One thing is that the truck has factory style disc brakes on the front that I didn't think were availible till 1971 and the other is the heavy duty rear end in a 3/4 ton. The rear end is what we call a no-spin with the rounded bolt on back cover and I think a pod/carrier that bolts out the front also. I know I have seen these before on 60's trucks, but they were all 1 tons.
Someone put a sticker over the glove box info sheet, so I think that may be unreadable, but the motor looks to be a 350 backed by a turbo 400 trans.
Truck body is in fairly bad shape, so I may end up pulling the motor and tranny and end up parting/scraping the rest.
Truck also came with a 1975 454/turbo 400 combo in the back out of an Empress motor home with supposidly 42,000 miles on it. Will have a closer look tomorrow.

Re: 1969 CST questions

Discs were '71 and up to my knowledge. Either they were swapped on or maybe the truck had a 69 clip installed? Not to sound dumb, but it is a 69 for sure?

Where in Canada do you call home?

Re: 1969 CST questions

Like HeavyD said, you are correct about '71 being the first year for disc brakes. Someone probably made the swap. The rear is the Corporate axle use through '72. The 3/4t trucks got the HO52 and 1t trucks got the HO72. They are physically the same axle housing and center section (single wheel 1t and 3/4t) with the difference being in the wheel bearings and brakes. The dual wheel 1t truck axles are just narrower. Most HO72s have a pinion deflection adjustment in the cone area. Differential parts interchange between all the HO series.
I see it has the '69 style clearance lamp lenses and the mirrors are original 69/70 type. Do the door panels have the bowtie up top? I think those are my favorites.

Re: 1969 CST questions

Did a bit of checking on the motors in the front and back of the truck.
The 454 is definitely a 1975, probably a 2 bolt main according to the numbers. It was very clean under the valve covers, but I could not get it to turn over.
The motor in the truck shows it to be a 350 acording to the casting number, 3970010, (1968-1979), but the suffix code on the front deck shows it could be a 1974 police motor, unless the suffix code was reused????
Suffix code is CMJ.
Heads could be correct as they have a late 1968 date on them, and show to be a head used on both 307's and 350's. Odd set of heads as they have a
70cc chamber on them so are good for a compression boost, but only have a small valve size.
Couple more pictures....
