Post cant get it to sound right?? help

i have a 96 x-cab auto w/305. i just installed a flowmaster and sounds great until i downshift. at first it rummbles nicely, but after a split second, something takes over and the rummble goes away. my 88 did the same exact thing. i cant get rid of it. whats causing this and how do i fix/dissconect it? it only sounds good when you dounshift to second, but after one or two rummbles, it goes away! and sounds like crap. someone said modify the smog pump, but i dont have one. thanks guys, this is realy gettin to me......

I don't see how anything can really make the truck sound different. I am in a different ballpark because I have duals with no cats and my trucks sounds sweet especailly with the headers. I know people with Vortec trucks who installed dual exhaust and kept their cats and they always soung the same. Just sounds like the muffler itself is the problem and plus the fact you have stock single exhaust which never sounds good to me anyway. Does the truck run normally when it sounds bad because it is possible something is screwing up the computer but other than that I would just say that is how the truck is going to sound and it is just the way the muffler is.

Sorry guys but disconnecting the lockup in the convertor won't do a damn thing to the way the trucks sounds, it would be stupid to unhook it anyway. I don't know why your trucks sound like crap because there are lots of us out there with late model trucks and better exhausts and they all sound fine.
