Replacement steering wheel

Does anyone have any ideas on a replacement steering wheel. My 1979 silverado wheel is pretty well shot and I am hunting for a replacement. I wasnt a good looking wheel that doesnt look like it came from the future.

some pics of your wheels might be cool

Re: Replacement steering wheel

I put a steering wheel out of an early 90's truck in my 76, they fit perfect, have a good feel and it only set me back $10 from the pull-a-part.

Re: Replacement steering wheel

Junkyards in your part of the country sound like a good idea. Out here in the desert you rarely find useable plastic or rubber parts in the junkyard, and they always want too much for the parts. This is where I wish I had bought one of those $500 whole junk trucks for all of the little do dads that you need to restore an old square.

Re: Replacement steering wheel

Normally the used wheels around here are sticky and cannot be brought back to life. I can still dig around and find one somewhere though.

Thanks

Re: Replacement steering wheel

Just a thought - I have wrapped the steering wheel on both old and new vehicles with the wrap you can buy at auto parts stores like Pep Boys. On new vehicles, I wrap the steering wheel to keep it nice, since I trade them frequently. On the old vehicles, like my square, I use two wraps to build up some thickness to make it like a newer style steering wheel. It works well for me.
My neighbor is letting me drive his old 1995 Dodge RAM he recently bought while my truck is being repaired, and I wrapped the steering wheel on that truck also. See pic. I helps keep the steering wheel a little cooler and gives you a better grip on the wheel. I use the padded kind - I think it is a thin polyurethane foam under soft vinyl. The RAM had a sticky and deteriorated steering wheel on the top where the sun hit it (it is factory leather wrapped).
I cleaned the steering wheel with orange hand cleaner, then wiped it off with water. I usually takes a few applications.
You ought to give this a try. You can use the wrap on your new steering wheel if you get one. I think I paid about $8 for the better quality one at Pep Boys - made by Axius.

Thanks a lot for the tip. If I cannot find what I'm looking for I will try that.
