Assembly Manual ?????
I have seen an assembly or chassis manual for the 64-66 somewhere on this forum. I think it was a Yellow Colored manual and showed how the truck was put togeter, I think it also had factory part numbers. Anyone knowhere I can get one or what it was called? Digital copy would also be OK.

Re: Assembly Manual ?????
Here's one resource, paper or electronic. The direct link doesn't work. Just click on the link below and type "assembly manual" in the search field.

Re: Assembly Manual ?????
Also keep your eyes peeled for a shop manual(year specific).
It has a ton of stuff that the assy man. doesn't have. Be patient they don't come up too often. T

Re: Assembly Manual ?????
I agree. Of the two manuals, the Shop Manual is invaluable, while the Assembly Manual is more "interesting". The Shop Manual shows how to repair virtually everything on the truck, from mechanical items to glass and door installations and adjustments. The Assembly Manual isn't really a manual at all in the common understanding. Rather it is a collection of drawings that were used on the production line to direct or establish how a sub-assembly was to be put together correctly. As a result the entire collection has almost no organization and finding what you're after can be rather tedious. It's most helpful in reassembling a truck that has been completely taken apart, showing the specifics of which direction the bolts go in, etc.
The Shop Manual (reproduction) is also available at the link shown above. Just type in Shop Manual in the search field under 60-66 trucks. |

Re: Assembly Manual ?????
I have the Classparts assembly CD. It doesn't load well and you have to scroll laborously through 525 pgs to find anything do to it not having an index. I wish i would have got the book/manuel instead of the CD. My 2cents

Re: Assembly Manual ?????
I agree with the others here. I purchased the 1966 factory assembly manual in hopes that it would help me through the assembly process, but it was very hard to find anything of use. It is neat to have, but not necessary.
I have the '63 shop manual with the '66 supplement, and they are great. It is sometimes a bit difficult to follow, since the authors were assuming that you had a fully stocked Chevy dealership service department with all sorts of specially designed tools. I would recommend just buying the shop manuals and forgetting about the assembly manual. |

Re: Assembly Manual ?????
I'm on the other side of the fence - I think the assembly manual is irreplaceable (as is the shop manual). Like all of you, drives me nuts that it is not organized and you do have to search around for stuff - but keep in mind that these are factory drawings that someone somewhere (God bless him) putt them all together into a book for us. It really helps to tab the pages so you can find stuff.
Note that the assembly manual covers 60-66 and the shop manuals were only produced in 60 (with separate 61 and 62 supplements) and 63 (with separate 64,65, and 66 supplements). So, if you want a "shop manual" you will need two full books, unless you are lucky enough to own a 60 or a 63. Bottom line, I have used both (well, all "3" in my case) extensively - I say buy them all. And I agree with the above comment about the CD, and I recommend you go with paper copies, because at least you can tab the pages on a paper copy - I would get lost browsing around the CD. While it would be a pita, someone could make an index for all the stuff in the assembly manual and then publish it on here! |
