Newbie from Germany. Power steering problem.

Hello all.
First of all I want to introduce myself. I'm Martin, 45 years old and come from Germany. Since a few days I'm owner of a 1965 Chevy C10 SWB Stepside. I bought it "unseen" in LA. The condition is better than expected. But, for an allowance to drive it on the German roads there are many things to do…

Now my first question to the professionals: The power steering pump is noisy, and the steering gearbox is very leaky. Is it possible to repair it (seal kit etc.), or better to replace the complete unit? Could someone help me to identify the components (make, from which car, build year)?

Thanks in advance, Best regards. Martin

Re: Newbie from Germany. Power steering problem.

Welcome to the forum Martin

That style of power steering pump was used from 1969 thru 1987 in the C10,20 and 30 series GM trucks, with 2 variations. The 1969 thru 1980 used an SAE inverted flare style fitting for the hose connections. The 1981 thru 1987 used a metric sized fitting with an O-ring seal.

Yes they can be re-sealed if you can find the seal kit. Replacing it with either a used or rebuilt steering box, will be more $$, but easier. Which to do depends on what is easier for you being that you are in Germany.
