Oh, this can't be good!
Trying to back up the driveway, the truck was struggling. Been having a little noise / shimmy issue with the reverse gear. In any event, decided to give the truck some juice and dropped the clutch. Tranny made an absolutely gut wrenching horrible sound. I stopped, parked the truck and went inside for a few minutes. Came back out and found this...

Re: Oh, this can't be good!
I'll second the cat little, the classic type, the cheaper the better! The block of wood is a good idea. I've always just scuffed my feet about walking in circles, but a block of would would work. The intent is to get the little into small enough crumbs and dust to get into the pours of the concrete.
As far as the tranny goes, I can only wish you the best of luck. Did the case break, or a seal fail?

Re: Oh, this can't be good!
I meant litter, upon further look of the case, did the crack? Is that what I'm seeing?

Re: Oh, this can't be good!
Sorry, guys, should have warned everybody there were graphic photos. Maybe the Mods can put an 'R' rating on this thread.
The real kicker is that was a Borg Warner 3-speed transmission with an electronic overdrive. It was out of a '55, so there was a modification to the shift linkage, which gave it a short throw for reverse and first. I think that might have been part of the problem...the reverse gears weren't meshing completely, which may have caused the shimmying. I'm guessing the gears stripped, at least. My best assessment is the case cracked (which is the line of fluid you can see halfway down the side of the tranny), so I can't imagine what the innards look like. I still have the original 3-speed Saginaw, that was working when I swapped out for the o/d tranny, so I plan on just putting that back in for the time being. I've enjoyed the novelty of the column 3-speed, but going auto does have some appeal. I've used the kitty litter trick before...the truck's incontinent so I've had practice cleaning up some oil from time to time. |
