That might have been a dealership emblem.

Whoa, is it still there? My last name is Murphy so that would be pretty cool to have those.

also, its amazing to think a dealership would drill holes in a car to attach their emblem!

Re: What goes here? Holes above fender

When I bought my first new car in the mid 70's, I had to beg and plead so the service people wouldn't put their name on by using a DRILL !!!

That's how it was ALWAYS done in the "Good-old-days" !!!

Re: What goes here? Holes above fender

Speaking of emblems, I was working on my front clip today and unearthed emblem holes (under a tiny bit of bondo...Ieee! P.O.'s!) under the passenger's side front side marker. There's none on the driver's side.

So, I guess I'll drill holes on the driver's side, since I have a drill, but I am the worst body man in the lower 48.

Anyone know where I can have something kind-of trick made up to replicate the standard emblems. I was thinking something like ......

Re: What goes here? Holes above fender

I have holes like that in the cowl of my K20. There were brackets mounted there from the original owner. They were used for the stabilizer (shocks?) mounts for his big ol camper.

Re: What goes here? Holes above fender

There's a dealer in Knoxville, TN that still drills holes for their dealer emblems. I talked to a guy once that his brother or bro-in-law special ordered a new Dually from them a few years back. he had it completely spec'd out, too. They called him when the truck arrived, and he got there just as they rolled it off the truck. They took it back to the service bay to get it ready while he filled out the paper work. He got done with the paper work and walked back to the service are just in time to see the guy, with drill in hand, fixing to start drilling holes in the tailgate. he ordered the guy not to drill anyholes in his truck. The service guy said he HAD to install and emblem on every vehicle sold there. The service guy went and got the service manager, who then went to get the dealership manager. He told him if he wanted to buy the truck it HAD to have their emblem on it. He said if it was a stick on, they could install it, but they weren't drilling holes in his brand new truck. The dealership absolutely refused to let the truck leave without their dealer emblem "bolted" on, so the guy told them they could keep it and he went somewhere else and ordered another new truck.

Re: What goes here? Holes above fender

When I got a new (used) fender for the LHS of my truck it had all the factory holes in it. The "C/10" ones and the ones under the front marker for the "8-350" emblem. The stock one on the other side did not have the "8-350" holes.

I duplicated the holes BEFORE paint. That way the holes have epoxy primer and paint in them so they should be good for another 40 years.

On a modern, galvanized steel, epoxy dipped body, painted automobile I would NEVER allow a dealership to drill a hole. For their emblem, rust proofing, or anything else. That would totally defeat the corrosion protection that the engineers in Detroit have worked out over the years.

I remember the cute lady they sat me in front of when I bought my first new car. I ordered it exactly the way I wanted it then this chick wants me to pay a couple hundred dollars so some gorilla in the shop can spray rust proofing inside of fenders that were dipped in epoxy at the factory. My little brother was with me. After the tough sales job I turned down my brother commented that he would have walked away leaving the car and the down payment 15 minutes ago.

Re: What goes here? Holes above fender

I understand 68, I did the same thing, except when I was going to buy the new truck I told them I wanted $400 off the price for advertising or remove the emblem. The guy looked at me like I was an alien. He said he had never heard of such. I told him I was planning on driving that truck for a long time and lots of people would see it, so either remove the sticker or $400 off the price, they refused to do both so I got up and walked out

Re: What goes here? Holes above fender

Kinda hijacked this thread but, even stickers are a blemish to the vehicle just like a dent or a drill hole. Typically around here they just stick license plate frames on the car.

Re: What goes here? Holes above fender

The car a just bought in April had BOTH, license plate frames and a sticker. The sticker took quite a bit of "pulling" to get it off - even after the blow dryer was on it for a while. I finally got it off !!! ( It's a used car and I'm sure the dealer put them on as soon as they got it in )

Re: What goes here? Holes above fender

I guess that we are pretty fortunate around here. The dealers just want to put their licence plate frames on here. Like a lot of you around here, I would not buy something if they wanted to drill holes or even just aply their stickers on my trucks. I reamed a Line-X dealer for installing his stickers on the rear window of the Garden Truck, then promptly removed them while he stood there with his mouth open.. WES
