USA Door Handles

Awhile back, The plate on the back of the door handle that holds the button and the return spring broke the tabs and fell off. I bought a repop from brothers. I would estimate that I have used it about 75 times. It just broke today

I have a piece of baling twine strung though the window to the inside door handle for the meantime.

I would like to find a MADE IN USA door handle for it. I refuse to put a chinese/mexican one back on it.

Also, the one from brothers I got had the holes drilled at the wrong angle. They were horizontal instead of sloping. Has anyone else had this problem?

Re: USA Door Handles

The only USA made door handles are NOS, and they are expensive. They do pop on ebay often. IMO, the best thing to do is buy a good used OEM set. Those come up for sale even more often here on the parts board.

Re: USA Door Handles

There are some pretty crappy repop handles floating around the market these days, and then some better repops that have the spring plate held in with two solid thru pins instead of the bent tabs. Mel

My doors are off of a '67. That could be why they don't work worth a darn.

Who carries those for a '67?

Thanks

Re: USA Door Handles

These are still available from GM at your local chevy dealer or gmpartsdirect.com. Part number 7743519. I was told by the gmpartsdirct.com rep that these are no longer being made. Not sure where they are made, I suspect Canada. I bought a set and the quality is very good. I bought 3 more sets for future use. There is also a set on eBay right now expiring Saturday around noon. Good luck, Lee

Re: USA Door Handles

Junk yards. I can normally pull a good set every once in a while, so I have spares in case one breaks. Even though they're used, they last a long time... much longer than repop.

Re: USA Door Handles

The driver side handle on my 69 had the same problem, the little tabs that hold the spring plate in place snapped off, I sanded the area good and clean and used some JB weld to hold the plate in place, it's been like that for more than ten years with no problems.

Re: USA Door Handles

You can drill four holes close to the tabs as possible and use good old fashion bailing wire making an X between the four holes. No one will see it inside the door and lasts for years. Don't know why it's usually always the drivers side that is the weakest crappiest one. And not because it gets used more either. Seen them fail with in a week of being installed new. Guess they need more lefty china men.

You might have to get by with root beer if you come to Montana within the next 7 years

I will leave my address if you promise to send me yours so I can send you a little "Christmas gift".

I put some new repops on my truck recently and closed the door about ten times and the spring and button fell out

I did this same thing, but with zip ties through the holes in lieu of bailing wire. No more troubles. Didn't want to replace my EOM handles with repop stuff.
