Question Power Steering Pump ID help...454 with remote resevoir

My power steering pump is leaking, but I'm not sure exactly which one I need to replace it with. The engine is a 454 LS6 from a 70 Chevelle (yes, it's legit, it's the CRV engine code ), but when I search for that car on the parts store's web sites, I don't come up with what I need. It has a remote reservoir and is mounted directly below the alternator on the driver side. It looks like the alternator would prevent me from using one with an attached reservoir or I'd just go that route. Anyway, if anyone can enlighten me as to what I need to be looking for (either a part # or application), that would be mucho appreciated. Here are a couple pictures of what I have...

I found a remote reservoir PS pump on Advance Auto's website, but it looks like the pulley would not stand off from the pump far enough for my application. As you can see in the first picture, there is a couple inches between the beltline and the body of the pump. The backside of that pump looks different as well. I think the guy I had on the phone said that was for a 90 something truck 454.

Thanks in advance guys!

If it's in a 67-72 truck, just get one for that application.

This engine wasn't even an option in the 67-72 trucks was it? Hence my question about not knowing what I have here exactly.

Do you know what application that set up is out of? Was this remote reservoir setup stock in our trucks? All the replacement pumps I see have the reservoir on the pump, but I don't think that will work with my alternator right there above it.

I think mine may be leaking where the neck attaches to the pump, so I'm going to see what I can do about repairing it. I just pulled it a little bit ago and will get it cleaned up and see what I can do tomorrow.

All 68-72 trucks with the big block option came factory with the remote reservoir power steering.

Here's one on eBay..

Re: Power Steering Pump ID help...454 with remote resevoir

I think some 90's Astro vans also came with a similar pump. Have you tried looking through the shelves at your local auto part store?

Here's one that's similar, the return is slightly different.

Well I always thought that because I have a 454 in mine that my Truck could no longer be using the stock type pump and reservoir so the the P.O had installed this remote setup from another vehicle. But now thanks to your thread shiner it seems that these systems were stock in our Trucks, and are readily available....I found them for $99.95 at Classic Parts.

Re: Power Steering Pump ID help...454 with remote resevoir

Supposedly this one is the correct pump (O'Reillys also carries it, but this site has a better picture), but I don't see the fitting on the side where the remote reservoir tube connects to it. I'm heading to the parts store tomorrow to see what I can find. I'm a fan of the $35 price tag as opposed to the $100 one, so I have my fingers crossed....

Sorry for the confusion. I just meant get one for a big block truck of the 72 vintage. If you told the part store guy it had a 454, he was probably lost, and didn't know that it didn't matter if it had a 396, or a 502.

Re: Power Steering Pump ID help...454 with remote resevoir

I swapped a 454 into my 69 and had to locate that power steering set-up. it's pricey to buy but fits perfect. I had a new pump on my small block so I took the "can" off the old big block pump and installed the new pump(from the small block) into that "can". All the nuts on the back of the can have "o" rings and they were new as well. I paid like $25.00 for the small block pump new so the conversion was cheap. By the way, most places I checked have a $100.00 core charge on that "can"....maybe now that they are making that"can" new the price will drop-that being said, the $100.00 rebuilt, 2 year warranty is a best bet and you can ebay your old piece on ebay and get at least half your coin back.

Gotcha, I wasn't aware that this same pump setup was what was used on out trucks with a big block. Actually, I'm not sure that this pump was used on the engine before it went in this truck, I had just assumed it came with the motor and not the truck (originally a big block), but it looks like I was wrong on that one.

Yes it's a date coded LS6, 70 Chevelle 454, January something or other I believe, not sure off the top of my head. It's in "that truck" because that's how I bought it. It may not be the nicest truck around right now, but it's the only one I have. I have the engine listed on the LS6 registry in case someone wants to buy it. I've had some interest, but after looking into what it would cost to replace it with something equivalent, it will take a good offer for me to pull a perfectly good running engine out of my truck and go through the expense and down time of replacing it. As far as making a mint, that's IF the right car is looking for the engine. If not, it's not as valuable as one would think.

Re: Power Steering Pump ID help...454 with remote resevoir

Shiner, did you get your pump fixed? how do you separate the cover from the pump? does it have a gasket? I just recently found out that they are two separate pieces, and I've been driving myself mad trying to find a pump that looked like mine not realizing all the pictures of pumps in parts stores are all minus the cover.
So as my pump is not the issue I only need to buy the can or cover as that's the bit thats' leaking...correct? CPP is selling a cover, what do you think? seems pricey.

I replaced the pump inside my cover, but I think I warped the cover enough taking them apart that I wasn't getting a good seal, so I've been searching for another one. This is the first I've seen, didn't know CPP had that one now. As far as how to separate them, it can be a bit tricky, but make sure you have all the fittings and studs removed from the back first of all. If you do it very carefully, you can insert a flat blade screw driver between the cover and case (from the front) to help break the seal and start working them apart. Be very careful to maintain the shape of the case, however.

if you having a leak issue on the "can" where the hose from the reservoir connects, you can take that "can" off and solder or weld the neck area so that it is sealed.( or clean it well and use some J-B weld on the inside-it won't show) The can just unbolts from behind and has a large "o" ring around the edge and "o" rings around the fittings in the back. Like I said, I bought a rebuilt pump for a 350 69 truck and just swapped the "cans". The new cans for sale are reasonable as core's are $100.00 last time I checked. If the leak is from the rear "o" ring seal, you get a new one with a new pump.........Steve

It was leaking from exactly that point Steve, and I could see at some point in it's life it had been welded to correct a leak, in the last year or so it started leaking from that repair so I got the JB weld and it fixed it but now it's leaking from somewhere else...I think it's time for a new can/cover.
I'll give CPPJeff a call, he's on the board.

Thanks guys.
