REar End choices for a BBC with mini blower and NOS

Now that the engine is getting finished and the tranny and converter are ready to go in, my next concern is what rear end do I need to make it stand up to what gets thrown at it. I figure I can limp along with the stock 12 bolt till I can get something installed, it's just not going to be as much fun till I do.

Here's the choices as I see them

1: Strange S60
2: Ford 9"
3: Chevy car 12 bolt built up
4: Used Dana 60 and get it built up

Dollar for dollar, what do you guys think is the best option? What's the narrowest I can go without narrowing the frame?

Ford the money, versatility and strength I would go 9 inch. There is a guy on Ebay that does 9 inches pretty cheap. A buddy of mine bought one with 35 spline Moser axles, Nodular case, Big Yoke and a spool with gm ends so he could keep his brakes for 1800.
I think its called quick performance.

Re: REar End choices for a BBC with mini blower and NOS

Have to agree, simply because EVERYONE and their brother is making brake kits, centersections, hundreds of gear options,,, and all the competition gives the the 9" a financial edge. I know no one wants to think there is a blue-oval part under their truck,, well CHILL.. if you can find a original housing any more it's rare and a bent disgard. Many of the offerings you find now are aftermarket housings, and ALL aftermarket components. Maybe not the strongest or most efficient design,,, but it's like MDS ignition and Holley carburators, the 9" is a 'standard' in the rodding / racing community at least at our level.

i WILL NEVER run any ford part or part based on ford designs (i.e., front distributor kit for LS engines) in any of my vehicles.

In fact, i think you should (seriously) look at the 14 bolt as a viable alternative to the above 4.

I'd go with an aftermarket 9" with a brace. It would be plenty strong, and as said before the best bang for the buck.IMO

Re: REar End choices for a BBC with mini blower and NOS

I voted for the 9" based on the aforementioned comments regarding strength and cost but have you considered just going through the truck 12 bolt you have?

You can build one that is very strong and requires no suspension mods that will suit you fine depending on how much power you're running and what uses it will see.

Thumbs up Re: REar End choices for a BBC with mini blower and NOS

FORD 9" hands down!

Ford 9"- The Ford 9" is definitely the most popular of the rear ends in drag racing. It offers good strength characteristics and the largest variety of gear choices. Many people swap Ford 9 inch rear ends into their hot rods, muscle cars and drag cars because they're readily available, are somewhat strong from the factory and can be strengthened easily. The center section of the 9 inch rear end is removable allowing you to swap gears or differentials on a bench. Nine inch Ford rear ends came in many widths and configurations. Depending on the application, the rear end may be heavier duty, be made of high performance materials or have a locking differential. Axles came in 28 or 31 spline versions from the factory. Typically the more splines the better up to a point. You'll commonly see 9" race axles with 33 or 35 splines. The differential spline count has to match the axle spline count. Gear ratios varied based on the engine, transmission and vehicle type. Center sections, or 3rd members, are completely removable and were generally made of cast iron. High performance 3rd members were made of nodular iron and hold together better than standard cases. These types are hard to find and often command more money. You can usually nearly buy a new high performance case for what you have in a good original nodular iron case.

How about chevy parts in a ford?

This is the same reaction I get when I ask questions regarding the 93 Mustang that I am putting a 6.0 ls in. Relax, it's not your vehicle but at least you offered some advice instead of just purely bashing.

For the money, I would go 9" all the way. Thats what I am going for. Moser Fab9 housing and axles for $1140 and a built center section for $1400 and I will never have to worry about my rear ever.

At the local dragstrip here you see alot of mustangs with chevy motors in them!!!!!!!
I wonder why??? Just ask Jason Carr.

Re: REar End choices for a BBC with mini blower and NOS

If this is a race truck only by all means go 9 inch, you can change gears quick to suit your needs just by having a bunch of third members with you. Street more than strip the S60 is just a new Dana 60 which although heavier than a 9 inch comes with 35 spline axles. I asked Moser about how strong the stock Dana 60 was and they said 600hp was the max limit stock. The S60 has forged S/S axles and like the rest your choice of gears not as many as f word. I think the highest I've seen is a 3.54 and the lowest 6.38.
