Does this combo sound like a winner?
Current: 283 with 4 speed manual, 4.56rear with 15" tires
Going to: same 283/4spd. Manual, 3.42 rear, 16.5" tires. I've yet to install the rearend, but I've got the quadrajet on my 283, hopefully with this ratio it'll cruise much better. Any thoughts? Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: Does this combo sound like a winner?
The 3.42 gears are a good highway gear, but yet are low enough to get rolling pretty good. Although with a 283, which don't develop as much low rpm torque as say a 350, you will need to watch your tire OD. Otherwise you may be slipping the clutch a bit to get going.
My suggestion would be to not go too tall of a tire. I would try maybe a 8.75 x 16.5 to start. Actually if you can find a set of 16" wheels, I would go that route. It is much easier to find 16" tires than 16.5's. Especially some used tires to try out before you spend the $$ on new.

Maybe I should stick with my 15" tires then until after the axle swap?

You've got 15's on there? Yes that wouldn't be a bad idea, until you get a better idea on a good tire OD to run.

Re: Does this combo sound like a winner?
I have 3.42's and 30.7" tall tires and it works perfect... I do have a bit more power though...
Perhaps a 30X9.50R15 tire (assuming your wheels are wide enough for that size tire)? |
