350 starter on 454?

So some dirtbag stole the starter out of my 69c10 with a 74 454. I've since come to terms with the loss of my little friend. The grieving period is over and now its time to move on and find his replacement. While rummaging through the shop I found a 86 sb 350 starter which appeared lonely and pleaded with me for a new home. My question is will the 86 350 starter work on the 454? They are/were TH400 vehicles. I realize I could crawl under said vehicle with said starter and see if it physically bolts on but then I would not have been able to share my tale of woe with everybody. Whatchyall think?

It is my understanding that they will interchange but the big block starter has a bigger armature (read beefier). If your engine turns over pretty easy I would try it.

Re: 350 starter on 454?

It will cold start the big block pretty good but might not when hot. That is operating temp like normal, shutting it down and restarting 5 minutes or so later. It might tend to grunt a bit. The small block starters used to have 2 fields and 2 shunts whereas the big block starters had 4 fields, stronger. A local starter/alternator repair shop used to beef up our small blocks starters this way. Always worked great.

Re: 350 starter on 454?

Is that 350 starter off a truck or car? In 1986 Gm went to the 1 piece rear main seals and with that all the passenger cars got the small diameter flexplate (153 tooth) but the truck kept the larger diameter (168 tooth) like your 454 has. There is high torque SBC starts that have the extra windings and contacts just like the BB starter. You can tell if it is a high torque start by the copper tab that comes out of starter housing. High torque starters the tab come out closer to the end plate, it will require a long copper spacer on the connection from the solenoid to the tab.

Re: 350 starter on 454?

Thanks again for the input. The 350 starter is off an 86 Burb and yes it does have the 1 piece rear seal.

Being a Suburban it would be for the big flexplate, you should be good to go.
