Heater Connection Pics

Which one feeds the heater and which one returns *to* the heater?
Or does it matter at all?

My assumption would be that #1 water would be hotter (Hey, that rhymes!), and that #2 would be the return back to the radiator for cooling.

But you know what they say about ass-ump-tions.
