power Steering conversion 76 GMC pickup

Father Son Project and he just can't handle the manual steering at this point.... so momma is suggesting we convert to power steering.

Question: can you use the standard column and simply add a new gear box, pump and pitmann arm?

What else is needed ...?

Thanks in advance....

I'm going to do this too. Basically, you need the parts you said, the brackets for the pump, the pulleys and belt, and the hoses between pump and box, and voila.
The manual box only has 3 bolts, so you'll need another bolt. My manual box uses the spacer on one of the bolts already, so i think all you need is the extra bolt.

My trucks power steering failed for a month i worked out to drive the thing. i would assume the column would work, new gear box, and pump. you may need to fabricate a bracket for a pump

Re: power Steering conversion 76 GMC pickup

I just finished mine...AHHHHHH....What a difference...I don't clench my teeth at the thought of parking it somewhere.
I used brackets from a 77ish nova...had to notch my smog pump bracket a little, and cut a little notch in the smog pump to clear the ps pump. I used the pump, hoses, and gearbox from a 78, all the parts from autozone. It makes it much nicer to drive.
