Rear Blinkers Electrical HELP

I have been driving with out blinkers for a couple months now cause I cant figure this out. Finished restoring my 65 six months ago, new wire harness, fuse box, blinker switch bulbs and everything. Blinkers were working fine, then I removed the rear end and regeared it, put it back to gether, did NOT touch any wires. Once rear end was back in, i turn on ignition and the rear lights both blink as if I have hazards, but front blinkers work fine. Nothing will get the rear lights to stop blinking except removing bulbs, or blinker on fuse box (which i did so i can still have brake lights.) What could be the problem? Seems like it could be a ground problem for the rear? its grounded to the tail light housing right? But if it was bad ground, wouldnt tail lights not work at all? Maybe blinker switch? But front blinkers work fine... Please help!

So you have tail lights that shut off and on without any problems and brake lights when required. Turn signals work on demand on the front and shut off when the turn signal is in the off position. The tail lights only blink when there's no other lights on? Is it a constant blink or does it vary. Do you hear the blinker on the fuse box working when the rear lights are flashing? When you changed the rear end was there a torch involved?

I'd run a ground wire from the battery to the tail light to start, see if it goes away.

Originally the was a ground from the battery to the engine. From the engine to the cab. From the engine to the frame. There was a ground wire from the frame to the box
( step or fleet ). These trucks are usually a ground issue especially when you paint everything up.

Ok, here is what happens. As soon As the ignition is turned on, rear lights flash like there are hazards, doesent matter if I have the directionals left right or off. Front lights blink left and right no problem. There is no way to make "hazard lights" to stop flashing. Unless i remove the flasher bulb from fuse box which I have done, so i can drive with running lights and brake lights, just no blinkers.

Is your truck equiped with a Signal Stat emergency flasher unit?

Another thing to try is to remove the two screws holding the fuse panel to the firewall. Twist the assembly to face you to see if any wires have rubbed the insulation on the wires off or if they have shorted out against another lead.

this has got to be something simple, because it happened to my 65 when I bought it. I never bothered to fix it though because I was using a 98 harness.

Looks like we got the same problem Joe.
Ive taken the fuse box off a couple times to look, but cant see anything. Since I did repaint the truck, I'll try running goood ground wires when I get a chance. But I dont see how that will help when they were working fine, then just stopped... No torch used on the rear end. Im thinking it might be somewhere on the fuse box though, I'll check again when I get time.

My guess would be the turn signal switch. That, and see if twisting the fuse box makes it better where it goes thru the firewall.

There's one set of wires for the hood turn signal above the engine wiring plug and a separate set for the taillights beside the gas pedal. There's power getting to the signal switch and powering out only to the tail lights. Disconnect the plug that comes out of the steering column see if it still occurs. if it still flashes then it has to be by the fuse box if doesn't then it's at the plug or into the turn signal switch behind the steering wheel.

Had a similar problem with mine, but it's a '63. Turned out to be the turn signal switch in the column.

The reproduction switch I bought was poor quality, and the metal contacts in the switch would warp, contacting each other, sending the turn signal to both lights in the rear of the truck. Several times I tried to repair it, but it just kept happening.

I went through two of those crappy reproductions before giving up on them and decided to buy the 'OE Quality' switch which cost more, and ever since the problem has not happened again.

I know the '65 uses a different turn signal switch than the '63, not sure how different they are. But this might be something to look into.

Turn signal switch is the same from 60-66 except for 63 that had a different bowl.

Googled the part#, shared part with passenger cars.

Yea, Either way, I'd like to find a better switch. the original was metal, but broken, new was is plastic and is kinda crap, since the bearing is in it and doesent hold the steering wheel too steady. Where'd you find the higher quality switch? I think i got my plastic one from lmc or Truck and Car shop.

Sadly, I don't see an 'OE Quality' '64-'66 switch, but maybe you could call them and see.

EDIT: With my superior sleuthing skills, I was able to find the OE Quality '64-'66 switch, and it's cheaper than the '63 OE Quality:
