Best High Temp Coating for Cast Iron
I want to put a good finish on my rams head cast iron headers. I see brush-on, spray and a rub on dressing. I want it to hold up, what do you guys recommend?

Re: Best High Temp Coating for Cast Iron
I will be interested in the replies because I want to do the same thing.
Eastwood had a high temp powder coat that was specifically designed for exhaust manifolds and headers but had to hold off production because some shipping issues that affected the product performance, and I never got to try it while I was building my exhaust.

Re: Best High Temp Coating for Cast Iron
I have been pleased with results using eastwood's high temp exhaust manifold paint applied with a foam brush. Comes in a little can. I have used both the brighter silver and after it was available, the cast iron color. Best results were with freshly sand blasted manifolds and follow the instructions. I recall you are supposed to let it dry before you start the engine and bake it on. It can make a significant visual difference on rusty manifolds but the rust will eventually come thru applied that way. Applied to sandblasted manifolds per instructions the finish has lasted many years on my Sunday drivers.

Re: Best High Temp Coating for Cast Iron
I bought some VHT hi-temp paint that is supposed to be good to 2000 degrees(we shall see) I have started the truck and let it idle and so far so good. I soaked my manifolds in vinegar for a week then rinsed and dried right before coating them.

Re: Best High Temp Coating for Cast Iron
I used the eastwood cast-gray coating that you apply with the foam brush. I broke my motor in on it (pontiac 400 with ram air manifolds) and they looked good after. It goes on a little streaky. The VHT cast grey 2000 stuff looks very good but I haven't tried it on a manifold.

Re: Best High Temp Coating for Cast Iron
I used the Eastwood brush-on stuff also. My buddy claimed he had good luck with it and the engine shop suggested it also. I haven't fired it up yet, so I don't know.

Re: Best High Temp Coating for Cast Iron
Mine looks good.I pretty much followed the directions on the VHT can.I didn't blast but used a wire brush and cleaned thoroughly. It has held up well for the 2-3 months it's been on there.I did just the exhuast with it.

Re: Best High Temp Coating for Cast Iron
I've got some ram horn manifolds that I sandblsted and applied the Eastwood brush on coating. I've been running them for 20 years or so and they still look pretty good.

Re: Best High Temp Coating for Cast Iron
I cleaned them with a wire brush. POR 20 and POR 15 are different formulas. If you put regular POR 15 on an exhaust manifold, it will burn off.

Re: Best High Temp Coating for Cast Iron
I used POR20 on mine. They recommend coating them right after sandblasting and thats what I did. The header on the right is bare metal after sandblasting. The header on the left is coated with POR20.
