mirror placement
I have recently acquired a 1972 gmc short bed 4x4 with an automatic transmission. The truck was purchased from the original owner. I looked for this truck for over ten years, as I owned the same make, model in high school. The truck is hugger orange and has not been abused, lifted, cut or bondoed. I feel very fortunate to have found this gem and am trying to keep it as original as possible. Now to my question. I purchased a drivers side mirror from chevyduty.com, the small rectangle type. The mirror is great but did not come with mounting directions. I would like to know where to mount the mirror on the door. Measurements or pictures would be greatly appreciated. I am sorry that I do not have pictures of my truck available yet but I am working on it. One other point. This is a great web site and I appreciate all of the help that is available. Thank you in advance for your replies.

I don't have exact mesurements either but I don't think the factory had it dead on all the time either. The pic provided should give you a general idea to go by. A couple of tips:
1. The RH mirror like those (even factory installed ones) is basically useless for other than appearance. It's nearly impossible to angle it correctly. 2. When positioning the mirror, make sure it won't interfere with the full range of operation of your wing vents. 3. The aftermarket mirrors tend to have their heads come loose, so don't play with them too much. Welcome, and I applaud you for you find and desire to keep it original.

i dont now if this will help you as its a different year truck but i pulled off those mirrors off my 1986 and there was an under the door skin plate that screws to the front post or window channel the main window rides in. once this is attached it gives you the exact location to drill the holes for the mirror that plate allwos the mirror not to vibrate

The drivers side mirror is different than the passenger side as far as distance from the front of the door. I can get you mesurments after I get home from work

Hey Duke 10. Had the same question when buying some mirrors from Wes for my 71 burb and this is what he mailed me.
The drivers side is 6 7/16" from the front of the door to the center of the front hole. Then 3 1/2" from the top of the door to the center of the front hole. The top of the top rear hole is 2 7/8" from the top of the door. The passenger side mirror is 8 1/4" from the center of the front hole to the front of the door. The top of the door to the center of both front and rear holes are the same as the drivers side. Good Luck Ronald
