See all of that red, how do I get rid of it?
In the pics below you will notice a non-factory red colored interior. Ever since I bought my truck I have wanted it to have a black and red interior, not red on "sorta red". Well it turns out that most of what I want to be black actually is, well was anyway. The visors, clips, dash pad, and arm rest are all OEM and in great shape with the small exception that the PO painted them red. The paint scrapes off with a little effort using my finger nail.
I would like to try to restore these parts, does anyone have a suggestion on how to properly remove the paint? |

The carpet in getting replaced with a rubber mat and the seat is getting re-covered. Also, the covering on the door panels is being removed. It's the same material as the seat and it is bad. Looks ok in pics but it is really crappy stuff.

I had a painted dash one time, and I used a power washer and it took the paint off with ease..

Paint stripper should pull it all off. Not sure if it will take care of the stitched area, but what do you have to lose?

Re: See all of that red, how do I get rid of it?
Not saying it can't be done, but trying to remove paint is going to be a PIA. My suggestion would be to replace or refinish everything. All of these items are usually available on the parts board if you want to go that route. If you want to keep what you have, you can get vinyl dye in a rattle can that will do a good job and since you're going to black should have no problem with coverage.
Follow this link and scroll down a little. There is a good explanation of how a guy refinished his door panels. The procedure would be the same for your other parts. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...401176&page=56 Good luck.

I know scale model guy use castrol? Purple power to tak paint off of plastic models. May be safe for the vynle underneath the paint. Worth a try.

Re: See all of that red, how do I get rid of it?
i'd start by removing the items fist// i'd try with a stiff bristle brush and a concentrated solution of spicnspan to see if that had any affect//next i'd try wiping with laquer thinner

Re: See all of that red, how do I get rid of it?
Lots of good ideas, thanks guys!
I think I will just remove the parts and start throwing some of the ideas at them and see what happens. Like Special-K said, "what do you have to loose". The parts are pretty much worthless in their current state so if they don't survive the paint removal it's not that big of a deal. That being said, it would be nice to save a couple hundred bucks if the parts do come out ok so I can replace that hideous steering wheel! |
