Re: Carberator Rebuild

How much do you want to spend, and how far do you want to go? One often overlooked and much needed repair to a q-jet is to re bush the primary throttle shaft. This is a major source of vacuum leaks. Another concern are the plugs in the bottom of the fuel bowl, although not as much if your q-jet is a later model ('76 and later).

So you can either send the whole unit off and have someone do it for you, do it all yourself, or a combination.

I used Cliff's High Performance in Ohio for the throttle shaft rebush, bought his book and rebuild kit, then did the rest of the rebuild myself. I couldn't be happier about the results.

IIRC, that all cost me slightly north of $200. For about 450-500$ you could send the whole thing to him (or several other good shops) and get your fully rebuilt carb returned to you in show condition.

Or, you could go down to NAPA and buy a kit for maybe $20, and just do that.

It all depends on what you want to do.

My truck has never run so well after doing this. For me, this was the best "upgrade" I could have done.

I highly recommend Cliff Ruggles.......cliffshighperformance.com
