Question Outer wheel bearings on a C20 Eaton H052

How the heck do the outer wheel bearings come out on these? Mine is a 71 C20 with the Eaton H052 rear.

I see a big clip inside that refuses to come out. I did a search on this forum and found a thread where someone removed that clip and the bearing still would not come out. ??

Before I go any further, I figured I better ask.

I was getting a light rubbing/grinding sound and found a leaky seal on one wheel so when I pulled it apart, the inner bearing is going, has pits in the bearings.

There is some metal particles in the oil from this. Any chance that might have ruined the other bearings? This is why I want to remove the outers so I can inspect them. Going to pull it all apart and clean, then do fresh gear oil too.

Thanks for any help,

Bob

Re: Outer wheel bearings on a C20 Eaton H052

I did this job on my C20 about 4 months ago. There are bearing races that hold the bearings in place that need to be pressed or pounded out. After removing the inner seal, the inner bearing falls out. You can pound the inner race out. I used a punch to do it. The races are hardened steel, so they will take a lot of abuse.

Once the inner race is out, you can then remove the clip for the outer race. The outer race is now holding the outer bearing in place. If you can, the best way to get the race off is to press it out by pressing on the bearing from the outside of the hub. I was replacing my bearings, so I was able to pound it out.

K2 did a good explanation. It may be ness. to drive the outer race out a little to take the tension off the snap ring. The original brgs are conical. The replacements are straight roller brgs.
