Re: Snapped Rear Brake Zerk Fitting

Anything you buy now is gonna be foreign, or rebuilt with foreign parts here in the US. It's all the same, lowest bidder stuff, it's capitalism. Why spend $20 an hour here for what you can pay a chinese kid $2 an hour for? Makes fiscal sense to me!

Score! Rockauto.com carries the following American companies: Coni-Seal, Wagner, American Remanufactures Inc, Dorman Products, Raybestos, Centric, Guardian and Acdelco. All the 2wd 1/2 ton cylinders sell for around $6. Im taking my Chineese cylinders bake to Oreilly's and running with the Raybestos brand. Their under $6 and have a 3yr / 36,000 warranty.

You've got to watch real close nowadays to get US made stuff. I recently redid the entire AC system on my 89 model daily driver truck. I use only AC Delco parts on stuff like this. Both the accumulator and condensor were made in China. Straight out of the lovely blue Delco box with the sticker of crap stuck to the parts.

Same thing here on brake rotors for the wife's '04 Envoy. AC Delco "Made in China" right on 'em.

I hope not, if it was in a Delco box. I bought my rotors directly from my Chevy dealer.

Re: Snapped Rear Brake Zerk Fitting

I don't think my parts were counterfeit. I bought them from a big wholesale distributor that I've been buying Delco and Motorcraft parts from for 20 years. The boxes were glued shut and legit. Even the stickers on them say Delco and made in China.

Correction: I just went out and looked at the truck. The accumulator is made in China. The condensor is made in Mexico.

Re: Snapped Rear Brake Zerk Fitting

Yeh, just because its an American company doesn't mean it can't be made in China. And some of the stuff I've gotten has been up to par I think. Talking to a man that owns Trique Aftermarket parts, you have to be careful though. A lot of their stuff gets copied. Looks the same, but the metal isn't the same, isn't heat treated or hardened the same...But enough, back to work. Jim

Re: Snapped Rear Brake Zerk Fitting

In case anyone was curious, my Raybestos brand cylinders that I ordered were made in China...life goes on. On the flip side though, the install was easy and went on without a hitch.

If I had a nickle for every bleeder I snapped off up here in the rust belt I'd be a millionare.

You are on the right track getting a new wheel cylinder.

Now go buy a propane torch or get a fresh bottle of gas if you already have one. You're going to need it. Heat that fitting up real good. You don't have to worry about wrecking the wheel cylinder because it is going in the trash can already.

When I get to where you are I also have a piece of brake line ready because even when heated up you still run a pretty good chance of twisting the steel line apart.

IF you twist the line off CUT the other end of the line off right behind the fitting and use a 6-point socket to remove that fitting. Again use heat before you make the situation worse.

Not that I've been there before.
By my calculations, you have broken off 20 million brake bleeders. I don't think I want you working on anything I own.

Good one!

Actually sometimes it feels like I've broken 20 million bleeders. Not just on brade drum wheel cylinders. Rust attacks front calipers up here too. You guys down in the desert just don't understand.

I'll never forget the first time I worked on a car from down that way. I was still working at the shop. Somebody just purchased a Porsche from California. It still had the Cali plates on it. He brought it in for the once over. It was in great shape but we noticed the rear brake hoses (independant rear suspension) were cracked. He said replace them. I got the job. I went and got the clear mask, wheeled the torch over, and thought I'd lean on one with a flare wrench just to see what would happen. I just about pulled my shoulder out of its socket because I was expecting the fitting not to move and it simply turned like it was brand new.
