1948 to 1954 a/c sytem on the cheap?
i need a cheap a/c and heater system for a 1948 to 1952 pickup.i know it doesnt get very hot in oregon.we still get 80 plus and it would be nice to have a/c with defrost.because we get alot of rain during the winter and windows fog up really bad.i know about all the aftermarket companies. but is anyone using an a/c system on the cheap, like out of something i can find at a wrecking yard.pictures would be helpful too

I have heard of people using the rear units like out of full size vans & Suburbans. I don't have any more info than that, but they are relatively cheap on ebay.

daze57, i dont have a heater. solidaxle,what make and model a/c did you use in your 56, do you have pics of the install?

I am going to use a unit out of a Kenworth sleeper. It is built in a unit heat/air.If I dont like the way it fits I will use the parts to build one that I like.

The unit we put in the 56 was of the plain brown wrapper kind ment as a replacement for a rear Van or Sub. We did not get the one with a heat coil in the box (Evap) as we were using the stock 56 heater.The consol we used was from a junk yard Chevy truck that had bucket seats, I don't remember what year as it was outside the truck on the ground!. I do now tyhat it fit inside the "Box" and we placed some vents on the top and bottom front for the outlets and the top ones were adj. so you could direct the air on your face.
These are the best pic I can find The one behind the seat routed the hoses up the back corner of the truck over the top of the doors and had a small rectangular vent in the headliner towards the front top of the door, and was a P I T A$$ to make it all fit when upholstered!

this thread caught my interest. a buddy of mine is suppose to give me an old ac unit from a minivan that he was going to retro fit into his truck. he thinks it will work in my 59, im crossing my fingers...

I used this one from Southern air in my 52 sedan. Has nice nostalgic look and it both cooled and heated the car well. I plan to use same unit in my 49 truck. I ended up spending about $700 counting the unit with hoses, fittings, condenser, etc. to get it going using stock compressor.
