Re: 65 SWB fleetside build. NEED YOUR ADVICE AND GUIDANCE!
Still waiting on word from the trans guy. Calling him tomorrow. In the meantime I knocked some of the small **** out.
Bought these things from classic parts.com. Just to have on the shelf when I get ready for them. I'll have 2-3 days off this weekend to pull the cab and its contents off the frame, and get the frame ready for sandblast. Radiator support rad draincock rad cap rad support mounting kit fender emblems inner fender seals splash panel for radiator lower and upper radiator rubber mounts rad support to radiator seal inner fender mounting grommets hood bumper set hood to cowl seal front hood to rad seal hood hinge springs front fender to cab seals cab mounting kit-polyurethane tailgate hinges front bed panel to bedsides bolts windshield weatherstrip rear glass-big window weatherstrip with chrome lock bead and tool rear trailing arm bushing kit-polyurethane rear axle to trailing arm u-bolts rear stabilizer bushing kit polyurethane Heater motor (already have new fan and rebuilt core) firewall grommet set and a complete door weatherstrip kit incuding felt and all that. Grand total is $777.51. After I call the trans guy and see how much the rebuild will be tomorrow, then I can look into buying a power steering box, hoses and power steering pump, as well as a booster and master cylinder to store until needed. Also need all new steering components, inner outer tierods, upper and lower u-joints etc. I already purchased the custom bracketry needed to install power steering and braking. |

BTW-I just found the painless wiring kit I needed to have lock up for my 700r4, I'll buy it when the sticker shock from classicparts subsides lol. It was so easy to find on their site!

Great progress man, Im jealous.
Not sure if your aware, but the cross member for the old 3speed tranny will need to come out and you will also need a tail shaft tranny mount for your 700. also you might think about a new wire harness, AAW makes a great product.

Re: 65 SWB fleetside build. NEED YOUR ADVICE AND GUIDANCE!
Could I get more info from you on that tailshaft mount? I know I needed to at least move the crossmember for the 3 speed back, but if It wont work, what does everyone use as a crossmember? Thanks.

You need an auto trans x-member. Early Classics sells a nice quality, sturdy part as does POL (and POL supports this site). You could also find one out of any 63-87 Chevy pick-up & it would work after drilling the req'd holes in the frame. You could also do a tubular aftermarket trans x-member. They don't offer the same torsional rigidity as the units listed above, but they still work to suspend the trans & bolt to the side of the frame rail vs the top/bottom lip (much easier to drill holes in the side of the frame ). Cool project BTW. You'll love the bbw swap.....

Re: 65 SWB fleetside build. NEED YOUR ADVICE AND GUIDANCE!
Thanks for the advice fellas.
Well I went to work this morning but it started raining from that tropical storm lee about 10am, and just now tapered down. Rained steady all day, which is great for our area and quite frankly I enjoyed it. I was in the garage working on the 65. pulled the doors, windshield, steering column and linkage, steering box, pulled the gas tank out cause the cab to frame bolts were under it, and my luck, the tank was completely full. got it and the seat out, pull the fuel lines out, pulled the mounting bolts, pulled the e-brake cable out, some wiring harness, etc. All I lack is picking the cab up off the frame, which might happen tomorrow. pulled some things out of the cab also, cargo light, mirror and visors, glovebox and cover, door sill plates, weatherstripping, etc. Still have some to go. When I pulled the window out, everything looked good, no real rust through. Hopefully I dont get a surprise when I have the cab sandblasted. Because there are other spots they filled with bondo when they painted it last time around. Anyways tomorrow I have to run to longview about 3.5 hours north and get a complete 63 cab, dont know what te shape is but all I need is the BBW panel. Also going to try and buy a new pass inner fender. When I get back if its not raining I'll try to get the cab off my frame and start dissassembling the chassis. Right now I'm tired as balls though. Every screw and bolt gets labeled

Re: 65 SWB fleetside build. NEED YOUR ADVICE AND GUIDANCE!
I used a gated Hurst shifter in the 'burb. I cant stand the gates, but having the switches for reverse lights and neutral saftey right there is nice. Be sure to throw some wire in before your carpet goes in and then it will be a breeze while re-wiring.
Camo tool bag? I have a hard enough time hiding stuff on myself!
