Cracks in manifold(s)
Hi all!
Just had my I6 (230) manifold machined after welding cracks. It does not work... Any one know why all cylinders have major leakage on the exhaust side on the lower side of the manifold. Have I missed anything? Does any one know where or how I can get hold of a new or used set that are ok? looks like a crack also in the intake. Is there anything to consider if I find one, or do all fit from 64-66? I have a 1965. //2mas |

Re: Cracks in manifold(s)
Yeah, that cast iron is not very forgiving. For the most part, the 194, 230, 250, and 292 L6 intake and exhaust manifolds are interchangeable. Unfortunately, it's tough to buy these things sight unseen because of warp and other damage. Is going to an aftermarket set up out of the question (Clifford Performance, Offenhauser, Langdon's)?

Re: Cracks in manifold(s)
Did you have both inlet and exhaust manifolds machined? If one is not machined the bolts and washers won't pull one of the manifolds up tight.

Re: Cracks in manifold(s)
Back in the 1970's I had a high mileage Nova with a 230. I had to run two gaskets on the exhaust & intake to get them to seal.
Just an idea / thought.... John |

Re: Cracks in manifold(s)
Was the intake and exhaust planed as an assembly?
Much like a V8 there is sequential torquing of the nuts to tighten the assembly on the studs.

Re: Cracks in manifold(s)
try leaving the 4 bolts loose that bolt the intake and exhaust together, tighten up all the mounting bolts to the head then tighten the 4 bolts that bolt the two manifolds together. This will allow the manifolds to evenly bolt to the head.

Re: Cracks in manifold(s)
I never had much luck getting those surfaced. Used ones are plentiful. They all interchange up to the ones that are intregal with the head. The later ex. manifolds had 3 bolts to the ex. pipe flange but you can put a 3 boly flange on your pipe. There are some variations in the throttle hookup on the intakes.

Re: Cracks in manifold(s)
Thanks for input!
It turned out like this... The company that did the machining machined too much, the flanges got to thin making the exhaust manifold to interfear with motor. Since the manifold was in bad shape I just grinded it to have clearance. But... the flanges are too thin, causing the sealing surface to bend. I'll have a look at the companys that have new stuff listed above. //2mas |

Re: Cracks in manifold(s)
Searched the web and found LMC truck. They have exhaust manifold for 150$.
Have any one been in contact with them? Trying to find tech support. When adding 36-5952 in to basket, it says compatible with 1973-76 250 I6. Any one that can help me out? /2mas |

Re: Cracks in manifold(s)
I know this may be inconvenient from a time zone standpoint, as I had Swedish company clients for many years, but LMC is one of the few suppliers that I still call to place orders. I haven't had good luck when ordering from them online, so I place all my order with them via phone. Here are a few other links.

Re: Cracks in manifold(s)
I am close to LMC. I can look at the catalog tomorrow but it will probably Monday before I can go there. They dont have a tech help department per-say. About all they know is what is in the catalog.
