89 2500 starts fine then dies after warm up
i got an 89 pick up for 400 bucks! the thing has what i think is a #7 rod bearing noise. it's pretty beat up but the tranny was rebuilt about a year ago and it's got the 14bolt 6 lug rear. the other day i went to start it, it started right up, no rod noise, left it idle for about 20 min (it makes the rod noise when the engine is warmed up) while i threw some firewood in it. then it died. i tried starting it it would start right up and quickly die, each time i tried to start it it would start harder each time and die right away.
i let it cool down for about 5 hrs came back and it started right up again and idled fine. there are no codes popping up. i even hooked my scan tool up all i got was 12. i'm wondering if it's the knock sensor because of the rod noise. this is just my beater truck (i'd like to just drive it till the motor blows then swap the tranny in my CUCV truck) is there anyway i can rig this truck to stay running after the warm up cycle? i don't care if i get crappy fuel mileage. any help would be appreciated. |

Did you check if you have spark after it quits? Sounds much like a ignition module heating up and failing and working again when cool.

I agree. If the electronics is breaking down....module....coil pack, then it would act like that. I lean towards the module, too. I'd get a new one, and be sure to use the dielectric insulator goop to prevent heat transfer from the breaker plate to the module.

Re: 89 2500 starts fine then dies after warm up
i started the truck the other night, it ran for about 6 seconds then shut off, i started it again and popped the throttle and it sat at idle then then stalled in about a min. i have an old 87 chevy at home thats just rotting i might just steal a bunch of stuff off that and see if i can't get this thing running enough to get it road worthy, figures i just wanna beat around in this thing, haul some firewood around, i have an 86 cucv that runs top notch, maybe i'll just get that rd ready and part out this other truck thanks for the suggestions

well I ended up selling the truck back to the orig. owner (bought it back, truck had sentimental value) he had an ignition module put in as well as a few other things and the truck now runs good

Your earlier post, told me it was the Ignition Module..... I had the same thing a few months ago..... But mine was not "as bad' yet, so it was a bit harder to determine.
