1994 engine

I have a 1994 5.7 tbi in my truck. can you tell what kind of cam is in there with out taking it apart? i'm looking at ordering a new (bigger cam) and wanted to know if my engine is a roller cam or flat tappet cam.

I'm assuming stock correct? i think its flat i dont think they changed to roller until 95 or 96

^ correct, but you may have a block that's machined for a roller. I'd run one if the block is machined for it.

next question. how do you tell if it is machine for roller lifters? in my big blocks- they make no difference.

Apparently you don't have any Gen 6 big blocks...
Lifter bores are taller and machined flat across the top. There will be 3 bosses in the middle of the lifter valley, about 1" tall. These hold the spider/lifter retainer in place.

Same with a Gen 6 454 ('96 - '99), they're all I build any more.

Just the stock set up with the retainers and the spider holding the retainers in place.
