Engine knock found
Well I pulled the engine out of the truck today and tore it apart to find what was knocking. Well the block and everything is trashed. It even distroyed the head. I think that a couple of piston rings broke loose. What do you guys think? Well now the truck will be down for quite some time while I save up the money for a new one.

FRENCHBLUE72--- thanks for the offer. I have one I can use for a core. Besides it will be awhile before I have the money. Things are really tight right now.

Oh, man!
I feel better about smokey oil burning 327 now. Thanks, I don't think I have enough to whine about now. Looks like time to start over on the engine for you which is what I shoulda done too. I tried a short cut to save money and merely "revived" my 327 with fresh heads (who doesn't like fresh head?) and a new cam etc. The bottom end is now telling me in smoke signals that it needed to be done too. Good luck, just remember, it's only money.

Congradulations. You now have a brand new boat anchor.
Sorry about that. It happens to all of us at one time or another. At least you can rejoice in the fact that you're not dealing with some new vehicle with a dual overhead cam engine design where you have to be a PhD from NASA to fix it. Good luck.

Yeah it's a real bummer!!! The block is not even salvageable. So I loaded everything up in the truck and hauled it to work and threw it all in the scrap bin. I figured I'd start from scratch.

Not that opinions matter anymore on that motor,but.. the tops of the pistons are intact, which should rule out broken rings migrating to the combustion chamber. It appears more likely that something went down the carb. Any pieces of air cleaner missing? That does bite the big one, when it takes out the block too! Sorry to see it happen.

Ouch,That's a textbook example of what happens when all that reciprocating motion gets out of sync. Honestly when you study the laws of physics, and all the various forces involved. I don't know how any of 'em ever stay together.
Over the years, I've heard it called many things such as " The motor , she done blew up" " It came from together" " It had a cast iron fit" " It locked up" " It grenaded " " It shelled out " " It shucked" " It scattered " " It fragged" And my all time favorite: " It done slung all the pewter out of the reachin rods"

In Virginia...."It blowed up"
Sorry about your engine, if you lived a little closer I could hook you up with a good deal on an L-82. Last edited by Randy70C-10; 08-13-2003 at 10:01 PM. |

it looks like it started with detonation..then probably loged a piece of the piston in a valve...then all bets are off...were those cast pistons? were all the valves still there? I just "launched" mine too..threw the block away today...i sure would be interested inthat 69 4 bolt elcamino engine

bigjimzlll >> Yes they were cast pistons. Also part of the valves were broken off too. I need to get with john on that motor. I also have a line on a big block. Choices choices, I have never had a big block truck. JIM
