New Cab Corners!

Very excited...I decided to put Orange under the grinder and replace the cab corners. I got the patch panels from year one, I think they were ok...with a little mud they turned out looking great! Thanks to 72Freak for showing me around the welder, it's not hard to pick up with a little patience. Im not going to go through the process but if anyone has any questions please dont hesitate to ask. I did the rockers first, sometime last year...and I would suggest doing them before the cab corners if you are wanting everything to line up in the end. I did have to replace the driver-side rear cab support as mine was rotted out, this will be easier to work in after you have cut out the old driver-side cab corner and before the new one goes in. *Please disreguard any fluids you see under the truck...I don't know what to say...she leaks!!!

Re: New Cab Corners!

Passenger Side was cut out as well, I forgot to take pics, but it was the same process as driver side. I actually did the passenger side first...it did get body filler and primer as well.

Re: New Cab Corners!

nice job!! i have read that when welding with a mig welder on sheet metal that you use the push technique? why is that if that's really what you do? And what were your ball park amp and wire speed settings ? again assuming you used a mig welder...thanks!

If I may answer: When welding patch panels you really aren't pushing or pulling, you are tack welding. If you push or pull then you are laying down to long of a weld and will warp the panel.

But to answer your question, in general, pushing allows the welder to better observe the molten weld puddle. There are a lot of variables however as to if you should "push" or "pull", such as position of the welds and thickness of materials being joined.

Oh, and your signature is great... thanks for making me laugh! "All of this crap better make a truck!" - my wife Sue.

Re: New Cab Corners!

I had the welder set on Temp A or the lowest and speed 3 seemed to work well...I was just popping it in and if anything used a circular motion on the tabs where I drilled a hole in the sheet metal. Like lakeroadster said, we are just tack welding this stuff in, i started with quick spot welds about 2 inches apart to keep the heat down...then moved around the metal filling in the gaps with welds. Just keep in mind if you stay in one place too long you'll build up too much heat and warp the sheet metal; that's when things get ugly!

As for the tabs, they may or may not have helped...I think it just depends on how well my patch panels matched up with the sheet metal on the cab. I did cut out my patch panels first, then drew and outline on the existing cab corners, this made for a good match when popping them in.

Re: New Cab Corners!

cool, thanks for both the answers. yeah, my wife is a crack up...i have an old hood that i think i'll practice on a little bit before i actually try and weld a panel on my truck. i knew that you tacked the panel on all over and to avoid welding in one place to keep the heat buildup down. are like one inch runs acceptable, or is it completely tacked on ? looking good orange crush!!

Re: New Cab Corners!

Its been a while but since everyone at the garage is getting thier trucks painted I started to get a little paint envy...SO. Some of the trim came off...some got taped...scuffed up the paint and here you go. On of the best back yard paint jobs I think I have seen in a while! Luckily a new friend was at the shop who had some paint knowledge and showed me how to laydown a proper rattle can paint job. After a few days I wet sanded it with an extra fine sanding pad, buffed it with polishing compound and it looks great from 10'...maybe even 5! I buffed through some of the paint to get it to match up with the original and it turned out nice. Orange just keeps getting better...
