Re: Project "Locomotion" '82 LWB Diesel

The 6.5 is getting the heads swapped and gone through now. Dropped the motor off yesterday. It should be ready to be put in my truck by the weekend. I should be dropping the truck off by the time the engine is ready.

Re: Project "Locomotion" '82 LWB Diesel

Well, all this rain we had put a hold on getting my truck out of the barn, but today it finally happened. The engine has been ready for weeks now. So, it will finally get put in the truck over the next week or so, hopefully. I should have taken pictures as it was being pulled out and towed off, but it started raining in the middle of it all, lol.

Re: Project "Locomotion" '82 LWB Diesel

Finally got the truck out and the new engine is in. And boy do I mean NEW, lol. The block and internals is about the only thing that is old, and even those had no actual miles. The guy that installed it put on new heads, glow plug system, inj. pump, fuel pump, injectors . . . the works. But, I still have work to do. The radiator leaks now, the brakes are sticking and the interior smells like gear oil or something died, lol.

If anyone has a lead on a diesel or big block radiator near Dayton, OH, or even a good repair shop, please let me know.

Yeah, I looked there. But $300+ is out of my budget for now. Not much cheaper than AZ, Advance or other online dealers.

Re: Project "Locomotion" '82 LWB Diesel

Got a radiator ordered from Advance. Got it during their 20% off anything sale last week. should have it by Wed. and in the truck on Sat. Crossing my fingers, but not holding my breath lol.

Why is it always that a project that was supposed to only take a couple weeks ends up turning into months, or even years, lol? So far I'm coming up on 3 months. And I still need tires and batteries before she hits the road. Heck, I haven't even heard it run yet and I've had it back for about a month lol.

Re: Project "Locomotion" '82 LWB Diesel

Well, for me it was kind of a big bunch of deals because our tool shop does work with General Engine Products. But, the guy that did the work says he usually charges between $2500-$4000 or more to do the work, including the engine, and all depending on what needs done. The engine I got was used for testing parts for the Humvee from 2000 to about 2005, and technically had no miles on it, only a couple hundred hours runtime. I got a deal on the new heads and he added new injectors, new glow plugs, all new glow plug system, new intake manifold, new exhaust manifolds, new water pump, new clutch, and the engine already had a brand new injection pump. This is a non-turbo set-up and optimized for high MPG's. It's estimated that I should see 28-33MPG after I get it broken in, which wont take long since I drive 100 miles everyday for work. I would have done all the work myself, but I didn't have the time, and the guy who did it all has more knowledge and experience with the 6.2 and 6.5 than probably anyone, anywhere.

I wanted to also mention, the pics I will get wont really show much difference from the 6.2 since most of the parts on the outside swapped to the 6.5. The only real noticeable difference is the fuel filter is changed to a screw on type and relocated, and the engine was painted black. But I'm going to try to work on it today and get some pic's. My new radiator is in, but I might still need new batteries.

As requested, new pics of the new engine. Since I took them in high res, you'll have to visit my FB page. If you can't get to them because they might be private, just friend me, and please say where you got the link from. http://www.facebook.com/dragsrockers

Re: Project "Locomotion" '82 LWB Diesel

So, I was able to go work on my truck today and install the radiator and 2 new batteries. After I got everything in, I fired the truck up and it ran GREAT. . . . . for about 2 minutes, lol. Long story short, I have some bad fuel lines between the pump and the tank that need to be replaced, and in the process of trying to get the truck to start, my starter is malfunctioning. Damn you Murphy's Law!!!!! I'm hoping I can get those 2 things resolved tomorrow so I can move on to sorting out my brakes and getting some new tires.

Re: Project "Locomotion" '82 LWB Diesel

Fuel lines 90% complete. Going to get some time to work on it tomorrow and pull the sending unit and see if air is getting in some pinholes or something. I really hope I get this solved tomorrow because I want to drive this pig lol.

Re: Project "Locomotion" '82 LWB Diesel

Well, today was a good day. Didn't 100% solve my starting issue, of course lol, but I did fix some other things, cleaned up the leftovers from the dual tank system and fixed what I thought was going to be a bad starter.

I have pic's of the progress, and I'll have a link up shortly. Not much to look at though lol.
