Heat causes starter to freeze

My grand dad just gave me his 72 sportvan, which he purchased new. He told me at times when its hot out, and the engine is hot (not overheated) the starter will freeze up due to the heat from the exhaust pipe which runs down next to the starter. It has a 350 engine. My question is does anyone know what I could use to insulate the starter from the exhaust pipe to keep the starter from over heating. He said in the winter it does not happen. My new van is in pristine condition and I love it.....Josh

They sale starter covers from jegs for around 25 dollars. I bought one for my rock crawlers.

You could probably make your own. Sheetmetal + snips. Maybe even use an empty can of peas or corn.

Welcome to the site! Wrap the header pipe next to the starter with header wrap. A high torque mini starter would also help.

They make an insulated starter wrap/blanket too.
I had the same problem on my 70 Camaro.
Once in awhile I'd forget and turn the engine off. I'd have to wait 45-Hour for that S.O.B. to "Cool Down", before I could start it and take off!

had the same problem then i installed one of the "newer" style GM gear reduction starters and it solved the problem, heat shield would probably be a cheaper alternative though...

I was having heat soaked starter solenoid problems, I bought a remote solenoid from summit and it fixed my starting issues.

Thats why ford did not have a problem theres are remote. we sell the relocation kit for $20.00

Do you have a part number for the GM reduction starter? I will probably need one when we put the 454 in my '67.

This is a sign of an aged starter that will end up failing you. You don't have this problem with a healthy starter/solenoid. I just replace the starter with an OEM type and have never used a heat shield or any fancy starter. Works for me. A heat shield helps prevent heat from killing your starter prematurely due to headers being so close. But again,I've never had a starter fail so often that I've felt the need to add a shield. I run headers on everything.

I tend to agree. It was the starter that came with the truck when I bought it. It heat soaked on the first drive home. So it was probably and existing problem. I thought I could get away with a shield but I am leaning toward a ministarter and the remote solenoid to combat any future problems. I like how the remote solenoid offers easy access and you can reroute the wires.

Thank you for posting the wiring diagrams, I saved them for future reference when I put a remote solenoid on my '67 project.

Knocked this out this evening. Thanks to all who helped. I am still thinking about replacing the starter but will probably wait to see how this has helped. It was pretty easy and went well. I ran the wires away from all heat sources. Cost about 30 bucks for the solenoid, some 10 gauge wire and a new battery cable.
