Re: Project Zumo... Drag truck

I have a full weight 68 deville convert that runs 13's on motor....with street tires

so I think that 4dr in car craft will be much faster after some tuning. It said 13's at 106 on the first pass.

Re: Project Zumo... Drag truck

Spray-Bomb,
hopefully that end play is just the center thrust bearing wore out. hot tank, new bearings, bottle brush hone and new rings and run it. clean up and use those heads with stock valves and pound boost thru it.

If you want to turn it up I'd spend money on some forged pistons...maybe rods but that's about it.

The 500 was in 70-74 Eldos, and all '75-76 Cadillacs except the Seville.

68-74 RWD cars had 472 engines (68 and 609 Eldos as well).

65-67 cars have a completely different engine family. The 429 in them was an updated version of the family that stated as a 331 in 1949.
I didn't type it word for word, but the look fors were the 65-75 calais, deville, and fleetwood, the NOT buys were the 67 and later fleetwood eldo and 75 and later seville. I have the mag right here, but I am no caddy man, just passing along what I "thought" was good info??

If the "look fors" are supposed to have the 500ci engine, then they were wrong.

The FWD Eldos (67+) could be a problem for a drag car, as the half shafts could be a weak point. I don't know how strong they are. Plus the have odd wheels which limit what tires you can use.

The 77-79 cars with 425s are good candidates too. I know one that just ran 15.65 with just a rear gear change and good tires (had a lot of extra weight too). Great candidate for a turbo.

The lower compression 71-76 472s and 500s would be good turbo candidates as well. I'd shy away from turbos the higher compression 68-70 engines.

How's the 'vert doing these days?

BTW, I see Matt has an engine for Bertha now

It's so tempting to put a Cad in the truck (see avatar) but 1) it for my 14 yr old son and he doesn't need that, and 2) I'd hate to loose the 3spd and now way it would live.

Re: Project Zumo... Drag truck

This project hasn't died yet..... but been busy working out of town (good thing these days).
Hope it is just the thrust bearing but haven't torn it down to make sure. I have located another 500 to use if needed.
Maybe this fall I will get time to get it running and finish the rear suspension etc.

Re: Project Zumo... Drag truck

from wat i heared about the caddy engines is that there made of realy hard cast iron same as the dartblocks and other high erformance engines , there realy tough and pretty light for there size .
there still pretty cheap to find but there getting more attention lately now that there s more hop up stuff available for them .
keeping an eye on this one

Re: Project Zumo... Drag truck

Nope, not sure what we're gonna do with this one anymore
We really would like to have something to go race, but with all our other projects, we just dont really have the funds or time to work on this one, and we are debating on going with something lighter than a truck

Re: Project Zumo... Drag truck

if its a longbed pickup you could mount the engine in bed behind the cab , a caddy will go and no weight will slow it down
a smaller might just bend the frame and lift the front
