Remember to winterize

Sad but true. It's time to think about winterizing already. I've not had my 68 Pick Up during winter yet. I've had to replace all my heater controls, new defroster ductwork, install a new thermostat (I've been without, the one that came with was stuck closed and I just pulled it for the summer). My heater is working good now, and my anti-freeze is good to 30 below. That'll be OK long as I stay out of Wyoming

Re: Remember to winterize

Cooler here, too. Just Thursday, it was 94. Today, it was only 78. Yep, cooler is better.

If you run antifreeze as you should, meaning that it is also a 50-50 blend year-round, you shouldn't have to worry about it being ready for winter. But, I very much remember worrying about whether or not my coolant was winter-ready. Must have had something to do with driving older cars and trucks. I mean, my '60 Impala was almost 14 years old! Now, the wifes' Lexus is almost 14 years old and it is a no-brainer to just keep the fluids topped off and hit the road whenever we want. Today's newer vehicles are much easier to rely on than what I grew up with, which were much better than what my parents grew up with.

Gotta say, certain times of the year I'm glad I live where I live. No winterizing here. Stay warm guys and keep those trucks ready for the spring!

Re: Remember to winterize

We've been having a heatwave here in the UK, Friday was the hottest 30th of september for a century at 29C. This came a week after forecasting heavy snow by the end of October followed by "A Brutal winter", the weather is totall screwed up. Hopefully by the worst of the weather we'll be in our new home and my truck will finally be in a garage under cover.

Cool Re: Remember to winterize

With my truck and Tahoe in the garage and both have the right mix in them I'm ready. I drive mine all winter well except for when there is snow on the road. The truck doesn't rest much. Heck the Tahoe hasn't been crancked in over 2 weeks.

Get out and drive the truck this summer and have some fun!
It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Re: Remember to winterize

If it gets under 65 degrees I am looking for long johns. I usually just run 30% anti freeze, one bottle of Wetter Water, and the rest just water. And thats using a 180 degree thermostat.

I used to think this way until I learned the hard way that the correct amount of "antifreeze" actually prevents internal RUST and serves to lubricate the water pump (not to mention reducing boiling). WLH

Ditto. It's not just rust either. Antifreeze prevents corrosion and scale from building up in the entire cooling system. If you have an aluminum intake/heads you will have electrolysis at work as well. It won't take long for your intake to be severely pitted. Even if you don;t there are still dissimilar metals in the cooling system. Antifreeze is for much more than just freeze prevention. Keep running straight water too long and you will be replacing freeze plugs as well as many other cooling system components. Just ask anyone with an open cooling system on a boat. There should be plenty of those close to you 67 sub with the jet boat crowd out there in CA. I've even seen boat blocks rust completely through the water jacket from the inside out.

my daily dont take this water stuff you speak of either

my burb you speak of on the other hand takes both, but only has the one (water) in it do to a leaky radiator, but i dont really drive it much so i haven't fixed the radiator or put anti freeze in it, just radiator sealant and water to keep it from leaking

Re: Remember to winterize

My winterization consists of getting the heater to work again. I found a broken lever in the controller and the hoses need to be replaced and hooked up.

I was also looking for a decent cab only cover (like a NOAH) to protect from the winter rains but I've had no luck finding anyone that makes them specifically for 67-72s.
